Well just over a year ago, there were some local articles about NRG Park - mainly the stadium - needing 2 billion for upkeep.

https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/Articles/2024/12/18/nrg-park-houston-needs-investment/
Quote:

Houston's NRG Park is "in need of billions of dollars in maintenance costs," according to a new report by Venue Solutions Group. The report is expected to show that the development needs a 30-year capital investment of $1.9B "to cover deferred and ongoing maintenance costs," including $1.4B "needed for NRG Stadium alone." The report "does not include assessments for NRG Arena or the Astrodome," and the assessment "addresses only the costs for deferred and ongoing maintenance, not renovations, improvements or upgrades." Renovations and upgrades for NRG Stadium could cost over $1B. The study comes as the Texans, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Harris County Sports & Convention Corp and Harris County "continue to plan for the future of NRG Park and negotiate lease extensions"

Also reported in the chronicle, but paywalled.

I'm shocked I tell you that a facilities consulting firm says the complex requires 2 billion to maintain. Shocked.

People forget Rodeo is more than just the stadium.

NRG Center, NRG Arena, Carnival area, and Astroworld parking.

Plus the light rail is huge for Rodeo.

Lots more plugged in people that have already commented but it would be really hard for Rodeo to leave.

Plus, the Texan aren't leaving playing at NRG. This has been the case for lots of teams in the past. The Rockets used to practice at Westside before Toyota Center was built.

the rockets don't practice at toyota center, they have their own separate facility like the texans are building in bridgeland. they only use the toyota center for games.

I happen to know a little bit about this:

Back in the late 90s and early 2000s, the Rockets had a sort of "gym agreement" with Westside Tennis Club. I used to live behind the facility when I was a kid and I remember you could see a big "Silver Rocket" logo on the side of the building. They then moved to the Toyota Center in 2003 when it opened where they praciced on a single court. In September 2024, the Rockets opened their own practice and training facility, the Memorial Hermann Houston Rockets Training Center. It's just north of The Post Oak Hotel in the West Uptown/Galleria area

Seriously, that sounds like a completely made up number. You could build a new stadium with that amount. Let's all pitch in with our tax money to build a billionaire their own facility. Sports stadiums being funded with taxpayer money is the stupidest thing ever.

I don't mind tax-payer funded stadiums, per se, but the taxpayers should get more from it than a maintenance bill after it's completed.

On a side note, who thought up the name "Bridgeland"? Might as well call it "Flood Zone."

That retractable roof was a dumb idea in 2000 and its dumb now. I wouldn't be shocked if that thing alone is half of the "deferred maintenance"

Didn't realize the Rockets built their own training facility as well. Guess Tillman loves to have everything in the Galleria.

That is a very generous description of the location but your attempt to put lipstick on that pig has failed. It's completely across I-10 from the "West Uptown/Galleria area."

I was thinking the same thing. I guess that ghetto is now referred to as "north post oak."

Tillman often takes his helicopter between there and the San Louis on Galveston. He made the round trip yesterday, in fact.

Make them practice in the dome with the rats until they get better.

In the meantime, send CJ Stroud on a South American Ayahuasca trip to get his head right. Marcel Reed too. Crazy how parallel the last part of their seasons were. They were genuinely the only reasons we tanked. They could both use a cross over into the spirit realm.

Don't they have a separate facility now? Off N. Post Oak near the Loop??

HLSR already has some off location build plans for the events that happen in the center and arena. Both the Texans and HLSR are trying to help alleviate the congestion issues around the stadium with the ever growing med center.

Are you saying there's a real good chance the NRG complex would no longer host the Texans games and Rodeo events?

I know not in the short term but it's inevitable the Texans and Rodeo leave the NRG grounds for greener pastures?

I know you're really connected so don't want you to get in trouble.

Reading the tea leaves it looks like at the very least they're positioning themselves to gain some leverage with the county to get what they want.

If they don't get it then the ball is already rolling on contingency plans.

Not that I dont believe you, but is there any documentation anywhere? All I've ever heard is that developers would have to work together before it would become a reality.

I'm assuming you see the difference between some pie in the sky assessment by a consulting group saying that there is up to 2B in future upgrades necessary and "the county is already behind by 2-3B"

Go drive Katy Hockley north of Katy to 290. Drive Fry Road. See the discussion on bridge connectivity over Cypress Creek. Harris County has waited and squeezed developers to make road and mobility improvements instead of doing one of the fundamental things it was set up to handle. All the while they are taking in the property taxes from all those communities to fund who knows what.

As a resident of Brazos County, it would be fun to watch a high stakes poker game between the McNair's and any nearby county officials. Y'all may have more emotions involved with the team, but I would let them walk. Someone else will come along.
