I have a feeling this will go over like a fart in church.

They going to have both NRG and the Dome empty just taking up space?

I think this is a long play. Plant the seeds now and hope they bear fruit in 10 years. If you wait until NRG is really old to start asking, you will end up like the Oakland A's.

NRG needs repairs and county in on the hook but they have no money.

One alternative the Texans are looking at is the appetite for public funded new stadium.

Even 10 years from now, NRG is only 33 years old. Taxpayers HAVE to say NO at some point so these billionaires learn. The Superdome is 50 years old currently with no plans of anything new and continues to host superbowl (8) and NCAA championships football & basketball

Only a matter of time before the Astros want a new one too.

Just for fun, what area in the Houston/Woodlands/Sugar Land MSA would make a great home for a new stadium?

A Texans Taj Majal in Patelfair?
Something floodprone on the Northeast side near the San Jacinto River?
Hockley area near 99?
Down there in Pearland/Manvel where there is still open space?

to be fair NRG Stadium has to be one of the most semi new, blandest stadiums I can think of. Nothing about it screams nice and it is aging horribly. Minute Maid for as old as it is at least has been kept up with with refreshes and remodeling on the inside. It's appearance doesn't reflect its age imo.

With all these stories coming out, there has to be some back office deals being worked between hlsr and the Texans. Everyone is tired of dealing with HCSCC

Cmon now...That has nothing at all to do with the Superdome. This is a result of it being located in New Orleans.

Build a new stadium on the old Astroworld footprint and don't demolish NRG... leave it standing there with the Dome! Then, when they ask for a new stadium in 2040, don't demo the new, new stadium, and build the new, new, new stadium right next to that!

By 2075, Houston can be the home to the world's greatest menagerie of abandoned sports facilities!!!

Same...Texans never did a damn thing for me other than disappoint me and waste my time. Good riddance. Although there were kind of fun to watch at times this year.

Now if they somehow were able to buy the rights to "The Oilers" that might be a different story. I realize that is silly.

We don't need a new stadium...but if we build one can we please get it out of the middle of nowhere south of the Med Center?
HDeathstar

As mentioned above, this only gets tractions with gaining the Oiler naming rights. Otherwise trying - keep telling us how bad it is, maybe have a few small rafter pieces fall during the offseason (could have killed a fan), then start with the field and facilities causing injuries to players, throw in a few water/bathroom issues during games. Script usually works.

How is NRG 33 years old?

It opened in 2002.

HLSR & The Houston Texans have plenty of money if they want to update it.

There's nothing wrong with the stadium. Maybe they should team up and buy the land to help Harris County out since they don't have the funds to care for it.

Reading comp is hard. He said, in 10 years.

HLSR + the Texans are not the gate keepers of NRG, that is HCSCC

The stadium has significant issues, one being accessibility. You think paying all this $ for the dome is bad, pumping money into that stadium is putting lipstick on a 3 legged pig.

Which is why I said to buy the property out from under the county.

The Superdome was also heavily renovated after Katrina, plus Caesar's added quite a bit when they took over naming rights.

They did a massive renovation before hosting the Super Bowl this year.

In the Superdome's case the State of Louisiana is the owner so they have more funds at their disposal to gut the place out and modernize it. Also, they pay the Saints to play there as part of the lease terms. It will be hard for Saints ownership to find a better deal.

AND
the hardest core local NFL fans probably pay well below the median in local taxes compared to middle class families

Classic example of the 'middle class squeeze' (perfected in California) where the poor and super rich combine forces to squeeze the normal taxpaying citizen.

This is definitely the Texans putting the news out there to get Harris County to jump into action. Per the very favorable terms the Texans got when they were created, the county is 100% responsible for maintenance, upkeep, and improvements unlike the Astros and Rockets who are partially financially responsible for making upgrades. While this saved the Texans money up front, the county hasn't been on top of maintenance and upkeep. Granted what the Texans are asking for as far as upgrades goes far beyond maintenance and upkeep. They see all the field level suites and clubs as well as full bars and restaurants that the most new stadiums have and the Texans see lost revenue opportunities. Some of that could be implemented in a large scale NRG Stadium renovation similar to what the Superdome has had. But the renovation and repair costs if the Texans got every wish look like they may be getting close to what a new stadium would cost. SO then they have to ask themselves do they really like their current location or can they find a spot and city/county government that would give them what they want now. I don't want Fort Bend County government to do it. I dont see how a hotel occupancy tax in fort bend could ever make enough to pay for a billion dollar facility. The Woodlands and Montgomery County seem just crazy enough to do it.

Just get Johnny to pay for it like Kyle Field upgrades.

Doesn't the Harris County Sports Authority get funding from hotel & rental car taxes, so supposedly it wouldn't be residents?

"Our priority has always been to support a renovation of NRG Stadium and that's where our focus remains," Texans spokesperson Omar Majzoub said in a statement to the Chronicle. If they go with the renovation route that will be interesting with all of the events they book there throughout the year. Given the track record of construction in and around the City of Houston theres no way it becomes a problem right?

What no one seems to be thinking about is the Astrodome is chained to the NRG grounds due to the county's mismanagement. Which severely limits what renovations and improvements can take place moving forward to any facility on the grounds. The Astrodome also eats up a large amount of the county's sports budget just to keep it a derelict rat infested dump that is unusable. Dead center of the the NRG grounds.

Add in the county is already unable to fulfill maintenance and improvement obligations to the grounds in agreement with the Rodeo and the Texans. I wouldn't be surprised if the county's failures ultimately force both to create a new project elsewhere. Especially if the county can't meet their financial obligations.

Due to some of the things I've posted, some of the preliminary numbers for renovations and catching up with maintenance are coming in more expensive than just building new.

Man, just tear down the dome. It's clear they're not going to do anything with it and the rodeo wants it gone as well.
