King cakes are pure unadulterated ass.
You haven't found a good coonass pastry in Saipan or Timbuktu?

Outrageous!.

King's Cake is one of the all time overrated food items. The very best are just good.

Y'all are crazy, king cakes are great.
I've had some dry king cake with that super sugary frosting…no thanks

Moist with cream cheese…bring it
I thought king cake was just below average, dry wanna-be cinnamon bun until I had three different kinds in the galley of an offshore drilling rig. Not sure where those coonasses got them from, but it was cream cheese, blueberry, and strawberry... almost more like a danish or czech kolache cake. Incredible.
We get a bananas foster king cake delivered to the office every year and it lasts about 30 minutes compared to the other king cakes that last for 2-3 days

I feel like a Tres Leches would hit harder on the Houston pride-o-meter than a King Cake, but you would have similar issues with shipment.

Tres Leches is the one thing I get from Arandas Bakery that's quality. The rest of it is basically suitable for pre-marathon carb loading. As much as I love Tex-mex, the Mexican dessert ranks only above the Chinese near the bottom of the dessert kingdom.
One of my biggest dessert disappointments is trying a concha for the first time. It was literally just plain ass bread with some sugar on top. Don't get me wrong, its not like I need more sugar in my life but for a dessert pastry it was terrible.
Concha has that shape and appearance, but does it also describe every other cheap Mexican carb in the genre?

And I hear ya - if you're gonna scarf down a fat bomb, it should at least be good. A nutritionist once told me that you have to identify your baseline dessert that you never turn down. For me, I'm talking about Blue Bell homemade vanilla. Any time you have a chance to eat sweets, ask yourself if it's as good as your baseline. If it isn't, skip it.
94chem,
That, sir, was the greatest post in the history of TexAgs. I salute you. -- Dough

My sister in law has a bakery in Jennings. I haven't had her king cake but I've had her other stuff & it's all fantastic. She ships.
