An area that could see a big increase in 2025 is moving inmates outside of the county. The state has removed beds from the county jail. Because of this, the county has budgeted more than $50 million to outsource inmates. The sheriff's office told commissioners on Tuesday they aren't sure when they'll be able to stop doing this. They plan to update them later this year. County commissioners will vote on the new budget at the Sept. 19 meeting.

Gtfo with that sh-t, Lina. That's government seizure of private property when eminent domain can't be exercised. It is not communism, but it is close. The compensation these folks will receive will be peanuts.

This greens road trailer park location is interesting because it doesn't show much crime at all over the year based on communitycrimemap.com. One would expect a LOT of crime in the area bounded by (east of) HTR, SHTR and greens road. Maybe crime is severely under reported in this trailer park.

This has every appearance of a Harris County land grab based on fluid government rules.

This is technically old news. Houston has been sending inmates to other states for a while now. Its just about ramping it up more.

These flood buyouts are in areas that repeatedly flood. The federal government may have paid out via flood insurance claims many times over what the homes and land are worth. This is an actual good use of public funds to both reduce waste and remove people from flood hazard prone areas. The cou ty is required to pay fair marker value and help in relocation and other assistance.

When any home is bought via this process all improvements, slabs, driveways are torn out and the area is returned to green space to act as a buffer for channel flooding.

Mobile homes are an interesting issue because the improvement owner may ot own the underlying land. If they rent their space it just makes things more complicated.

There used to be several houses at the corner of Jones and Cypress Wood that are now gone due to buyouts. Cops busted a party I was at in one of them when I was in high school.

Yup- there's a neighborhood just south of White Oak Bayou near Hollister & W. Little York where all but a couple dozen or so homes were bought up (out of a few hundred) because of flooding. It's kind of weird to see all the green space and a few homes here & there who rejected the buyouts. It's been a while since I've been over there but we used to park in there to fish the bayou or the Hollister detention basin next door- both of which offered surprisingly good fishing and water that would get super clear. Unfortunately, I think the secret on the detention basin got out because the last time I fished it there was a ton of trash that made it clear folks were fishing it and were keeping every damn thing they caught. I'm not sure where I have the pics now but that basin would be almost gin clear and we'd catch 30 bass on the fly in the 12" range in an hour.

No, but it's REALLY tough on families who are already financially strapped, often because the breadwinner is incarcerated. You can make snide remarks, but if you've ever been in the system, you see how devastating it can be to remove jailed people from any support network. This has nothing to do with being tough on crime, which I support. It has to do with being stupid on crime, and doing things that are counter-rehabilitative.

I legit figured that there was no reason to try and steal stuff in a trailer park when a better neighborhood would offer better loot.

Driving around my old hood in JV when I'm home visiting my folks it's crazy to see all the houses that have been lifted 3 or feet in the old part of the city.

Curious, when they do this do they leave a crawl space and turn garage into bonus room, or raise everything?

From what I can tell it looks like there's a crawl space but the garage isn't lifted so there's a large space above the garage that kind of looks weird.

I'm surprised Ferris Wheel isn't in a nursing home already. Wasn't he like prime bar age in 2004? The dudes an ancient relic

Since 2022 inmates have been sent off to other counties and states. Roughly 500 inmates a week are shipped off and brought back. Harris County is paying for beds for the inmates, lodging for the guards when they come into Houston for pick up and drop off. Diesel for the busses to make round trips. And, all medical issues are pay for by the lovely tax payers of Harris County. Not sure 50 million is enough.
