Denver
Denver is an overrated shthole

Traffic is, at best, equivalent to Houston. But probably worse. Weather sucks - it is a desert environment. Politics suck. Homeless problem blows Houstons out of the water. Winters are cold and dry and snow is not pretty after 2 days. Everybody there hates you no matter what.
I live down in the springs, having moved back after being gone for 7 years. But I make it up to Denver metro fairly regularly. I can attest to the fact that homeless and overall third worldish ****tiness has certainly increased. Honestly most certainly as a direct result of Abbott bussing. It's really bad in places, like downtown la ****ty. Although the burbs for the most part are still nice.
Nah, we took our kids through there on the way to Yellowstone a few years ago and stayed downtown before all the bussing started. It was already terrible.

Santa Fe is like the walking dead in certain areas (off the main drag no less).

It's depressing.

That describes almost all of New Mexico

But for outdoor activities, if I chose specifically based on that I'd be somewhere in Florida.

And as for the career…

My consulting jobs usually reinforce to my clients they don't a have a clue what's going on and the fear of getting sued keeps them coming back to me.
My BiL is a consultant with Deloitte. I forget his title but he just got a promotion, anyway, this is a standard joke with us.

Agree 100% with this. I was there back in October of last year doing some work. Parker (about an hour outside of Denver) is absolutely beautiful and seemed to be a lot less liberal than Denver. That said, the median home price there was around $800k. We went to a Rockies game and that was cool and then hit up a few bars afterwards. Saw a f'ing shooting happen about 40 yards from where we were. First time in my life I've witnessed a shooting. Downtown Denver is pretty ghetto. There are some nice pockets in Denver, but be prepared to pay out the nose to live in a pretty small place in one of those nicer areas.
This is crazy because in the early 2000's it was immaculate for a downtown area. I remember being blown away by how clean and safe it was. My buddy lived there from like 2005-2007 and i remember him telling me the homeless population was small and pretty confined to one certain area near the shelter for the most part. Heard it's out of control now.

They just haven't elected liberal enough politicians if you ask me

I spent many years in LoDo visiting for events. Even met my wife at the Falling Rock Taphouse. Last time I drove through there it was so bad and sad remembering what it once was.

I left. Didn't go far but went where the COL is significantly less and I could have some land and still be close to all that Houston offers. I'm honestly blown away at the quality of life out here. Way better than we anticipated.

I was born in Houston and spent my first 10 years in Houston. Parent's divorce eventually landed me with mom and sister in Lake Jackson. Spent my next 4-ish years in Aggieland then came back to the Houston area, where I stayed with my dad in Missouri City until I landed my first job and got my own place. I've lived in Richmond and far west Houston before I met my wife. We picked Katy as a place to live and rear our kids as the area reminded me of the smallish town I grew up in.

Now I have a light at the end of the career tunnel (retirement) within a decade. Other than the days I go to my office in City Center, I never go into Houston. Too many people, too many morons who think they know how to drive, and too many areas that I used to go to turned ghetto. Even the freaking Katy area has gotten too big - too many people and idiot drivers. If not for my job, we would leave now. I can do my job remote, but we do have to be in the office a few times a month, and as a software engineer, I thrive in a more collaborative environment than I can get in my home office.

But less than a decade, we are out of here. The current plan keeps us nearby, though, as we are talking about getting a place in Aggieland. But there are many more people there now than when I was there in the 80s.
