Quote:

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- Harris County District Court Judge Kelli Johnson was arrested on a DWI charge early Tuesday morning, ABC13 confirmed through court records.

At about 1:55 a.m., a Houston police officer said he witnessed Johnson make an improper turn from the center lane at the 11600 block of Hempstead Road onto the 7600 block of Kempwood Dr.

Quote:

Johnson remains in jail at the moment. This comes after she was stopped for reckless driving and suspected of drinking back on April 12.

Are DWIs the only thing judges take seriously, or are those offenders generally let off with PR bonds as well?

I was picked for a jury on a criminal case where she was the presiding judge a few years back. I asked her to dismiss me for a family hardship, and she did, so I didn't serve. But after going through the absolute mess that was voir dire, she seemed to be very reasonable and level-headed. Seemed being the operative word, obviously.

Judge Johnson was elected in 2016 to the 178th Criminal District Court after serving as Assistant District Attorney for 17 years. According to her court bio, she is the first openly gay female judge elected in Harris County.

Looks like this was one of her most recent convictions. Not an excuse by any means, but presiding over cases like this has got to wear on a person over time.

I once sat on a jury in her court. She was actually pretty reasonable for a democrat. She was from really close to where I grew up in EastTexas and I could pick up some of that country girl toughness with a bless your heart attitude during court.

In further reading up, she was pulled over in April on suspicion of DWI and then went missing/leave of absence in May from the bench. And then cops were called to her house for a disturbance and now this….

She probably needs to speak to someone at TLAP. The Texas Bar has a ton of resources for lawyers with substance problems. I hope she gets some help.

One of the awful cases in Johnson's court turned out to be my neighbor's son. He beat some lady to death with a brick.

I've heard from some people that Johnson seems to get a lot of the worst cases in Harris County.

Just voted, and she's up for reelection - unopposed.

Perfect example of the mess that is politics in this country.

What snark thread are you pulling at here?

There were no reported problems of booze or pills before she ran unopposed in the primary in March.

Are you implying that it is irresponsible for Dim office seekers to not oppose her in her own party's primary? Are you implying Republicans saw no point in challenging an incumbent openly gay white woman? Or she should have stepped down since she obviously has a chemical addiction but the judicial power is even more addictive?

I don't know why I am supposed to feel like politics in this country are so messed up because a boozing/pill popping judge is running unopposed.

On my itemized list of why the US is circling the toilet drain, ol Kelli Johnson is just a dingleberry.

Personally, I think she should step down. I hold her to a higher standard than many other elected officials because her personal problems could lead to overturned convictions of dangerous criminals. And I would say this regardless of whether or not she had a D or R next to her name.

It's also unfortunate that any of these positions (and there were a lot of judge positions with only one candidate on the ballot) are single candidate, especially given the current state of crime in Harris county.

I've sat in her courtroom and thought she did a good job with the case. But regardless of how good of a judge she is, if she can't get her life together, she's putting her judgements at risk. And since she sees some of the worst criminal cases you can imagine, that concerns me.

I absolutely understand, and I agree she needs to deal with her own life. My post was more a comment on BGM than Johnson.

Saw her name on the ballot (D). I am not saying that Kelli is a bad judge, but many of the soft on crime dem judges that need to be voted out did not have anyone running against them.

I was really surprised by how many uncontested D judges there were. With as much spending as there was on the campaign to "vote out Democratic judges," I would have expected the Harris County GOP to file a candidate in every race. I voted R in every single criminal court race and a couple civil races.

I posted this on politics on the same topic:

The trouble is lack of job security. Finding R candidates that are willing to give up a successful practice to become a judge (on the unlikely chance that an R wins election) in a county where they will very likely be tossed out of office the next election cycle on a straight party-line vote, only to have to restart their legal career, is daunting. When Harris County was consistently electing Republicans, judicial incumbents rarely saw primary challengers or lost elections. There was job security, even if it didn't pay the best. So now your candidate pool is limited to the few attorneys open to a high risk/low reward proposition...young attorneys at the start of their career, attorneys otherwise already looking for a career change, a second income earner in a household, former judges who aren't in love with their mediation practice or of counsel position, etc. That's not meant as a criticism, and nearly all are better than what is currently on the bench. It's just few and far between.

Sad to see what has become of Harris County, I exited to Brazos County but will always follow what is going on in my old community. Miss the days of Johnny Holmes as DA and the law and order that once existed!
