To complete our restructuring plan, I'm pleased to announce Dr.Arelia Johnson will be taking on the role of Chief Equity Officer for the County. In this role, Dr. Johnson will be an integral part of our senior management team. She will foster a proactive commitment to equity, inclusivity, and accessibility across the County, educate employees on equity-based practices, and champion equitable outcomes throughout Harris County.
As Chief Equity Officer, Dr. Johnson will lead efforts to promote equitable outcomes across County departments. She will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to implement Commissioners Court directives and policies that address systemic racism and discrimination.
Dr. Johnson brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this role. A native Houstonian and two-time graduate of Texas Southern University, she has a strong background in psychology and political science. Expanding on her education and interests, she earned her doctoral degree from Howard University in sociology and criminology. Dr. Johnson's commitment to community empowerment led her to establish The Owned Project, which has evolved into a leading diversity, equity, and inclusion training firm. Additionally, she has held various leadership positions, contributing significantly to advancing equity efforts within Harris County and beyond.
Most recently, Dr. Johnson served as a Senior Program Manager at the Justice Management Institute, where she led equity efforts and provided support to counties across the country. Her commitment to promoting fairness and justice will undoubtedly make her an invaluable asset to our team.
