As far as I can tell, it's from saying "H Town" with a grill in your mouth.

Nothing to do with a grill, has to do with a certain sets speech patterns.

H tine hole it dine, gnome talmbout. Listen to any old screw tapes or lil Keke etc and you'll hear it quite frequently.

There are a few theories as to why Houston is called The Tine.

The city of Houston is colloquially referred to as "The Tine" due to its reputation as a culinary hub, with an abundance of diverse dining options. Just like the prongs of a fork, Houston's neighborhoods and communities come together to form a vibrant culinary scene, each contributing its unique flavor to the city's gastronomic landscape.

Or maybe it is because "The Tine" is a playful nod to the renowned actress Tyne Daly. Just as Tyne Daly's performances captivate audiences with their depth and diversity, Houston's rich cultural scene and artistic offerings captivate visitors and residents alike, earning the city its affectionate nickname.

Tyne Daly. That's someone I haven't thought of in about 35 years or so. That gave me a good chuckle.

Well done sir!!

H-Tahn (How Slim Thug, Lil Keke and various local rappers always said it) quickly morphed into H-Tine and basically got codified into Texags Tine Board lexicon, somewhere around 2006-2007ish would be my guess?

I guess it is not glamorous to say "Tine" is derived from an overrated Houston-centric rap ditty wherein the city is referred to in ebonical parlance.
