What is this place? Named by NYT as a Top 50 restaurant in the country. It's on Long Point in same strip center as Vieng Thai, which is legit.

Reviews on Google, Yelp leave something to be desired. Anyone been there?

Yes. It's pretty good, although surprised when I saw it in that list the other day.

I think Tacos del Julio on Longpoint is better

All national lists are either paid ads or some other sort of agenda, not much difference than the local top lists

The aguas frescas are awesome. The rice pudding too. Caldo de res too. Haven't had anything else there.

I lived a block from here and that place was poppin on the weekends. Parking across the street, 2 paid HPD officers to pause traffic, large pop up tent to add tables. We went a few times but I was not impressed by the food. Now the live band with all gold jumpsuits was entertaining.

saw Gatlins Fins and Feathers also made the list. Food looks good in pics online, but nothing out of the ordinary of a typical soul food place somewhere imo? Anyone been there want to chime in?

I've been to Fin and Feather once and got a poboy and gumbo. There was zero wrong with it but it didn't differentiate itself from a handful of other places in this town with similar.

It's pretty small and got a cool vibe. I would certainly go back but don't ever think to go there because there's closer options for similar that are just as good.

I've been skeptical of these lists for a long time. The writer just puts something together before a deadline, adds in a few off-the-beaten-track options. It's something to read/browse, but hardly some definitive list. Plus I've wondered if any free perks from restaurant-to-writer are ever involved.

I used to go there 20+ years ago. Food was hit/miss but yeah, the entertainment was legit back then as well.

For them to find this place, I wouldn't be surprised if they asked Chris Shepard to give them a few places he likes. I was at a dinner with him one night a few years ago and asked him what his favorite restaurant on Long Point was and he said El Hidalguense. About a year later he mentioned it again in a similar conversation. Outside of that, I've never heard another mention of the place (other than eating next door). I've still not been but want to try a Sunday brunch there based on those conversations.

a lot of those lists are actually just pay-to-play (cough, cough, Michelin guidebook).

Been a couple times and I think it's pretty good, especially their fried chicken.

The amount of roach killer cowboy boots were pretty fun to see. And I mean the curled up ones lol

I don't know about fine dining, but Vieng Thai is good, I miss Kim Chau $5 pho Fridays, can't go wrong with Feges BBQ (kids eat free on Wednesdays), Blind Goat is very good, Seoul Garden, and any Koren fried chicken place.

That's funny. Every other restaurant on that list is from the past 3 years. Which makes sense as it says they are restaurants that they are "excited about", as in, to see how they grow. El Hidalguense shows it opened in 1994.

I thought Feges was tremendously overrated compared to the price. Truth, Roegel's, Gatlin's, and Pit Room are all much better IMHO. I thought it was on-par with Tin Roof out here on the Upper East Side only about double the price.

Truth is my favorite but all of those others are about the same to me but I'm not a BBQ expert. Good brisket, I liked the mac & cheese, kids were free and happy hour beers.

LOTS of private school kids were all over the tiny play area.

The 2-meat plate at Tin Roof is like $20 last I checked and the similar at Feges was close to $40. So not quite double but close. And at Tin Roof the sides come with the plate but at Feges are extra.
