Thinking about a sump pump and a garden house

Totally. Hit up Harbor freight for a sump pump and garden hose it. If it's too far away, garden hose it into a kiddie pool in the back of your truck and drive it over.

I've floated the Frio river with less flow than the leak near my office has been wasting for going on 4 weeks.

I hope those flags are to mark where the leak is

if that's a city line, they would probably sue you for stealing water.
For water main leaks like this, the City actually encourages people to use it for irrigation.

PAGING RYAN THE TEMP: is this a normal summer thing? I know the street pavement will buckle in extreme temps, but I never really thought about water lines running under the roadway.

The street where I drive thru the artesian spring today is under construction about a quarter mile south, so I didn't bother reporting it. Plus, I figure the busybodies in the hood had already submitted dozens of complaints.

The soil contracts and moves, which stresses the water mains and causes breaks.

Maybe at the next WHCRWA meeting I'll demand to know how many thousands of gallons per day COH wastes through breaks that starves member MUDs from water that leads us to other issues: subsidence and possible fines.

COH does maintain records of lost water. It's essentially recorded as "unaccounted for" or "unbilled" water. (or at least they used to)

What else is Unaccounted for or unbilled water?

Theft, fire hydrants, leaks, etc.

Since they make the public track and pay for hydrant use, they should do the same for COH maintenance and HFD. Not difficult to add meteres.

I have no idea whether they do that or not. I haven't dealt with anything like that in a long time.

Even so, what's the point? I mean I agree with tracking for accountability. But who's going to pay COH Maintenance and HFD water fees? Hint, it's us.

Because they and the public should know how much water is wasted by leaks.

I'm sure they have to report how much water goes into their system.

Water in
-paid usage
= wasted water

According to a chron article:

" Along with the 30 billion gallons of water lost in 2022, the city lost another 9 billion gallons from January to April 2023, according to the latest data. Some months, Houston lost of over 20 percent of its total water supply."

City has to be raking in tons of money even with the water losses. My normal bill is ~$100 but the last 3 months it has been $400-500 of which more than half of that is sewer which they are getting free money as my excess water went on the yard and not in the sewer...

30 Billion Gallons in 2022!

They lost the approximate equivalent of 1 Million swimming pools of water last year.

you need to fight it. they are screwing up so many bills right now it's a joke. we own a townhome in the heights that is rented. our tenants got a $700 water bill. the yard is only about 7 ft by 20 ft. and we know they aren't watering it. did a leak check to make sure. the city is telling people to just pay what their normal bill is because its so ****ed up.

Hypothetically, if you used 30,000,000,000 gallons in one month, your monthly bill would come out to approximately $867,000,000

I'm pretty sure the bill is correct but good point and I will check the bill vs meter. I've been watering a good deal. I have a large corner lot so that doesn't help. I'm not trying to have a lush green lawn but rather just trying to have the grass survive. Years ago I said screw it and didn't water my back yard and it all died. This resulted in me having to resod the entire thing. I'm not doing that again.

I really wish I had invested in a 2nd/irrigation meter, would have saved me thousands over the past decade.
