I'll be happy when the Lina issue is no more and the county judge can go back to quietly administering the county government without major incident and focus on the real issues like developing a plan to reconstruct the Astrodome to its former glory.

Former glory?!? We're just waiting on the football team to get good enough to be worthy of playing in there. Might be a while.

The tens of millions spent to set up covid tents in the Dome parking lot which never saw a single patient (twice) should have been spent on a dome refurbishment project. Bring back Dome foam. Bring Back Hot&Smokeys. And also bring back dome Coke with the thick syrup. Only then will the government of Harris county be on the right track.

Build a brand new apartment for the county judge in Dome 2.0. I don't care. Just get it done.

If we are wasting money on the stupidest **** imaginable it might as well be on something people like and that unites the city. And nothing would unite the city like a fully restored Astrodome.

But in all honesty with the influx of all the non-native Houstonians the number of folks that can remember and truly appreciate the greatness that was the dome in all of its former glory is rapidly dwindling.

The Dome stands empty, dark and silent, like a god cast down from its enthronement, only to now huddle in disgust, its eyes fixed over a town full of Cajun/Pho Fusion trucks and endless Boba Tea shops. The evidence of a once tough, oil town as lost to memory as Dome Foam, Hair sprayed Dolls, Destruction Derbies and a daredevil that once tried to ride a barrel from its roof to a small water tank and ****ing died.

Every evening the shadow of that looming rectangle of modern mediocrity creeps up the side of the 8th Wonder as the sun sets, plunging it into a darkness only rivaled by its own heart. It's hate grows with every townhome that's filled by former Californians with their electric vehicles and plastic surgery. Its silent suffering only interrupted by dark blue and red clad "fans" on their way to cheer on a team that ran down the crack of McNair's ass 20 years ago or former Bostonians in Luccheses and straight leg bedazzled Levis passing by to eat a tofu-dog on a stick and play cowboy for a day. A travesty so complete that only the thought of Bud Adams burning in Hell watching endless replays of the second half of '93 Bills/Oilers can bring the mood back around a bit.

The Dome is still there, majestic as ever, biding its time. Some of us who sat in those orange and red seats still remember. We carry the memory of it with us in our hearts, the smell of it in our Pasadena-blackened lungs, forever.

Honestly, I'm glad its locked up. Its safer. If any of our newly-minted Houston-transplants stepped foot on that hallowed ground, they'd ****ing shrivel up and die from unworthiness. They haven't sacrificed enough yet like we have. Besides, I imagine Dave Ward sneaks in to drink and talk to old friends. And that mother ****er will kill you.

Part of the challenge in addressing the question of competency is that most voters simply have no interest in learning about the core functions of different levels of government. In order to really discuss competency at the local level, the audience would need to have a basic idea of what competency would look like. But most people simply vote along ideological lines, or based on emotion surrounding the hot button issue of the hour. And they vote for local offices - when they do - the same way they vote for national offices.

Just an anecdote, but one of my buddies told me a story about getting dragged by his wife to a Spring Branch Republicans event last year where Mealer was speaking. He's not any kind of political junky, but he was dismayed and laughing about some old dude who got up to scream at Mealer about Dan Crenshaw. Even my buddy could see that it had nothing to do with Mealer; nothing to do with the office of Harris County judge; and nothing to do with the county budgeting issues she was trying to discuss, but that's the kind of thing people face when they try to go into any detail about competency in local government.
It's why we've ended up with a bunch of what we've gotten on all levels of government. People aren't interested in learning about how it works.

Crenshaw can't even go to his own party meetings. What's the point of being called a RINO for 2 hours by people whose full understanding of government comes from conspiracy websites?

Exactly. I remember seeing it hit the side, but we didn't know he'd died until we got home, or maybe not even until the next day.
The good 'ol days before social media. If this happened now, everyone in attendance would know he died within minutes, and would miss the rest of the show because they'd be busy swapping pix of his autopsy.

I was there. But I was a baby. My older brother was 5/6. My mom brings this story up from time to time. Apparently, my brother kept telling my mom "he's dead. He's dead." And she kept saying no, he's fine that's why the show is still going on.

reading that takes me back to all the great memories I have in the dome.

-Astros games in general admission or behind right field hurricane fence with the picnic tables
-Dome dogs
-the team store behind home plate
-hay hauling competition during go Texan days at the rodeo
-oilers game
-Gallery furniture.com bowl

It brings a smile to face as I typed that out.

God you Tine-folk suck. When a building no longer becomes useful or too expensive with zero purpose: blow that **** up. Your memories do not serve a functional purpose and a decade after it closed there have been this many useful purposes: 0.

ZERO

For public infrastructure this is useless and the fallout for saving memories has been a D takeover of the county. The result is worse than any positive outcome because none has been found and the result has been worse.

Without Emmit's Quitoxic campaign to save a decrepit rotting zero-purpose building we don't get Lina.

Lina gives a 3-2 advantage for redrawing commissions districts.

That gives Ellis the power to redraw and flip precincts.

That gives a 4-1 advantage for the next tax setting hearing.

If we have questions about whether the hockey stadium in Anchorage needs to be torn down and replaced, we'll come to you. In the meantime, leave Tine stuff to the Tine folks and kindly STFU.
The Dome didn't cause Lina or the Dem takeover of Houston, that sits squarely in Beto's narrow, feminine shoulders and white liberal women in the loop.

What the hell is going on in here?

I feel like we've come full circle.

And the dome and Ed's insistence on pouring money into it absolutely contributed. I don't care to go back that far, but would wager many tine republican posters stated they wouldn't vote for him because of it. I still remember the threads *****ing about his trip overseas to look at some dumb botanical garden in an old stadium, etc

We all voted to tear it down, multiple times. Ed kept pushing the vote trying to get the outcome he desired. This is what got Ed voted out. And to a certain degree, straight ticket voting.
