Sounds like the BP oil spill didn't destroy the ecosystem that much after all.

I just checked the surf cams for the area and the water right now near Pointe West and it looks really phenomenal. Flat surf and green to beach.

Can confirm that it's green to the beach and trout are in the surf

Not a terrible drive to Jamaica Beach and they have a nice pool and playground on the bayside where you can pay to swim.

Have those dickholes at PW beach club even opened the restraunt/bar that's been closed all year? We did the $25/day a couple months ago with all that sh*t closed … I'll buy buckets of tikis all GD day, but charging with no amenities was dumb (and I guess we were just to swim in the pee pool)

On top of that, the rentacop was booting everyone's yetis and trotted in booze

Bolivar is a nice place. The water is fine. Kudos to those who've figured out how great it is in the late spring and fall. Houston is a crappy place to live for much of the year, and we're lucky to have a decent beach so close.

And yeah, I do have plenty of September and October days available

I don't think the restaurant is open. We were there last year and I think the food might have been the best on the west end of Galveston (not that there's really any competition). I wish West End Marina would've stayed slightly more upscale, now it's basically almost indiscernible from Nate's.

We were at Crystal Beach three weeks ago and there were no issues with tar. Idiots on 4-wheelers, yes, but it made for great people watching during the early evening.

No, nothing special. Those restaurants are gonna be packed today. Check out H2 (Hardheads), or Crystal Beach Cafe (Asian), or G's Mocajeta. Jose's is edible. I havent been to Nauti's. Here's a link to a Facebook page on Bolivar dining. And a pro tip...I've got a third row water view place that's very affordable if you can get away during fall weekday blocks. Lemme know.

The fishermen are ticked. Used to be a huge place for the fish to get in and out, now they have to go around the port. IDK. Everything the Army Corps does down there it seems like they're just taunting nature. One good wave and it's all for naught. I don't fish much, but I do love the blue crabs.

This seemed like the appropriate place...

I just finished booking out my summer season, and I had a cancellation for 8/5 - 8/9 (covid of all things?!). These are the last 4 nights before school starts, so I really need them booked. $1080, all in. atm94unc98 at the google to direct book. Small kenneled dog okay with prior consent.

Rollover Pass created huge erosion problems requiring frequent dredging of the ICWW to keep it navigable, which cost Galveston County significant $$$ for their portion of the cost sharing with the Fed Govt to dredge the ICWW. There were also some negative environmental issues created by the pass. Galveston County took possession of the pass through eminent domain and had the Corps of Engineers fill it in.

Yeah, but it's hard to see how it's any better. Every time a minor storm comes in, it seems like all that fill washes right into the ICW. Maybe it is better. IDK. I figure Galveston County wants to rid themselves of anything they can re: Bolivar except, of course, the property taxes.

It's a constant battle with Mother Nature to keep the ICWW navigable. The thing is that keeping Rollover Pass open cost Galveston County money since it is a local project. Maintenance dredging of the ICWW is totally Federally funded and costs Galveston County nothing.

Found our way into Pointe West. Can confirm the restaurant is closed, only food is pretty much chips and things just that. It's like a little league concession stand with beer, mixed drinks (gross margaritas with margarita mix), and frozen drinks.

Supposedly the upstairs bar will open in a week with rotating kegs of beer (everything is canned now).

It's a real step down from last year unfortunately. They could be making a fortune right now with a legit restaurant.

Still it's a nice relief from the beach.

Yeah I was fortunate to find someone who could set us up with PW.

It's nothing fancy but I've always been nostalgic about the west end of Galveston, from wade fishing with my old man in Christmas Bay as a kid (technically Freeport but it's west from 45 when we'd drive down on a Saturday morning) to playing army in the dunes with my cousins when we'd rent a beach house once a year.

To this day, It still feels weird going east of 61st, like last night when I took my family to dinner. We were always hanging that right, either at Seawall or Stewart.

I love Galveston. At 46, it represents a time of my life that felt magical for a kid growing up in the 80s in a lower-middle class family.

And the funny thing is, the recent tar washing up just makes it even more nostalgic...

All over the shoreline and in the shallow water before the first sandbar at Crystal Beach was this clear jelly looking seaweed of some sort. Anyone know what the hell that is? Don't recall ever seeing that in my 42 years of frequenting the beach down here.

Was less clumpy than this but everywhere.

Tarballs be live and in effect too.

Really beautiful area between the end of the seawall and the state park. Have camped at Dellanera RV park several times, and at the state park several times. Hard to justify doing that now with the house at Crystal Beach, but I love lonely March walks on the beach from those public access points.

You just need a little soy sauce and sesame oil.

Add some Viet Huong fish sauce and it might be a tasty dish. Should have brought some home for the freezer.

Seriously tho, what was this jelly seaweed that was all over us? Anyone? Internet isn't helping.

Sargassum is the least of the problems in Cancun and playa. The city sewer and all the trash runs down the beach. Whatever water quality reports you read there are BS.

When I first started going to Galveston regularly in the '90s, all the beach houses had tar remover dispensers in the outdoor showers, with signs that said "Check your feet before entering."

Over time, those all got taken off. Guess we'll see a revival.
