I'm not from Harris County nor do I know politics there as well as most of you do, but Whitmire does have a very strong following. And he would be much better than SJL. He is much smarter than she.
It has, for years, boggled my mind that Whitmire always gets the endorsement of LE. He talks a great game about supporting LE but behind the scenes he is NOT a friend of LE. For a few years I worked with him on criminal Justice matters. Behind closed doors he always hurt LE by not letting bills get out of his committee.
The one thing I did agree with him is the issue of A/C in our prisons. He always said he would agree to those
A/Cs when every resident of his district had A/C in their homes. I don't think he cared one way or the other about the A/C in prison issue. He just did not want to spend the $$$. And I am good with that.

Shejack doesnt even have to campaign in her district to win by huge margins. It doesnt matter how much bad press is out there on her, time and time again the voters have shown they care not.
You can thank Texas Republicans to a certain extent for her being re-elected. They keep drawing TX-18 as a D+25 district. The other piece is she has never faced a serious, well-funded challenger in a primary.

I mean, don't they pretty much have to under the Voting Rights Act?

Yeah, they figured one crappy district that is a perpetual loss is better than a handful of districts that are a tossup.

Doesn't change the point though. Her district, and generally Houston as a whole, is comprised of morons that don't think about anything when they vote, think about only the letter next to the name, think about only the color of skin and in this race probably whether the candidate has a vageen or not.

I go back to my statement that until the voters of Harris County prove otherwise, it should be assumed they will pick the worst possible D candidate on the ballot. Because that is what they have done for a great number of years now in the majority of elections.

And PedEgg checks every one of those boxes.

Thats how 18 and 29 were drawn and maintained.

I don't think Ryan was here yet to enjoy the mild humor of seeing Gene Green win the Hispanic opportunity District.

Gerrymandering of commissioner precincts.

You can't gerrymander a citywide race. The mere fact that we have Republican at-large Council members is a demonstration of Republican voting strength in Houston.

The DNC gerrymandering major markets all over the US in 2020... soooo?

No offense, but if you think a citywide race for mayor can be gerrymandered, then I'm not sure you understand how elections work.

Poll: Whitmire, Jackson Lee lead mayoral race, with Whitmire poised for double-digit runoff win
Quote:

The Houston mayoral election appeared to narrow to a two-candidate contest between state Sen. John Whitmire and U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, with Whitmire poised for a double-digit lead in a likely runoff, a University of Houston poll shows.

The University of Houston's Hobby School of Public Affairs on Tuesday unveiled one of the earliest polls of this year's crowded mayoral race. Thirty-four percent of likely voters expressed support for Whitmire, 32 percent for Jackson Lee, and no more than 3 percent for any of the other 12 candidates.
Quote:

Yet, in a potential runoff between the two top candidates, the gap expands significantly, with 51 percent of voters leaning towards the state senator and only 33 percent backing the congresswoman.
The money quote:
Quote:

Forty-four percent of the 800 surveyed Houstonians said they would never vote for Jackson Lee

Lol… usually, yes. One of my trips was to the dump on the north side of 610 and somebody had a big old Whitmire sign at Main & Crosstimbers. I would ordinarily consider that SJL territory.

I'd have to cross the aisle and vote Whitmire because he's the least bad of the Dem choices and whomever the Republicans put up has precisely zero chance of winning.

Plus, seeing the humiliation of SheJack lose would be worth it. Can you imagine her non-concession/concession speech? The idiocy and malaprops as she tries to stumble over her congratulations/sour grapes while attributing her loss to racism or sexism would be epic.

She will just sulk on back to DC and f up more things at every opportunity. She's not losing no matter what the outcome ends up being.

Woudl be nice if in order to run for one office, a current office holder had to resign from the current office first. That would be too logical though, so it will never happen in government.

What does it really matter in Houston? Zero shot for any R candidate, so why would anybody with better things to do waste their time? I probably wouldn't if I lived in the city limits.

you'd have to a complete buffoon to think its a waste of time to vote Whitmire over SJL. Even though both democrats, the difference is astronomical.

Some lady here in Houston got arrested for making threats against the DC judge overseeing the Trump trial and also made direct threats to kill SJL.

Party line? In a non-partisan election where most of the candidates are Democrats?

whitmire has several issues he has voted as a conservative on. he's a democrat, not doubt, but SJL is on a whole new level. has queen sheila ever done anything you agreed with?

you really think there is no difference between them? if so, you need to educate yourself on both of them

Her influence is largely due to the fact that she is a shameless camera hog, and the local media jumps at a moment's notice anytime her staff sends out a communication. She gets elected every two years because TX18 looks like this:

Meanwhile, John Whitmire is one of the most well-connected, well-supported local politicians of the last four decades. SJL will not be the next mayor of Houston.
I pray you are correct. The election of SJL would mean we have become Chicago.
