Not sure where to post so starting here as my pops needs to move to Houston (Sugar Land)…

Pops has been blessed with 4 different types of cancer. His care is palliative and he needs to get from Baltimore area to Houston to live out his days. He's got a ton of Delta reward points so I'm sure I can get him a first class seat that'll lay all the way down. That said, he can't sit upright for more than 10 minutes or so at a time, definitely not enough to board, taxi, and take off before he's in so much pain he can't take it.

Anyone know if Delta (or any other airline) makes any concessions for ill patients that may not be physically able to follow all of the TSA's BS guidelines? Are there companies that help with shiz like this? Maybe a nurse rides next to him???

Option B is renting a van in Maryland so he can lay down and driving to Sugar Land.

Man I'm sorry to hear that about your dad. Cancer sucks, so I'll skip the obligatory "Houston is full..." post.

No idea if the airline/airport can accommodate him & the 10 upright sitting limit. I've seen airport workers escorting older folks and helping them get through security & to the gate. Might want to call the airport and see what can be done.

I know there are charity Flight groups that fly patients in their own planes. I've met both a patient and a pilot for these sorts of things.

You might search around and see if that type of service or a paid service is available. Should be much easier than traversing a big airport and dealing with so many other people but I doubt Delta points will be involved.

Sorry about this but you're a good kid to support your dad.

Do you know what hospital he will be dealing with as they'll have case managers who deal with this all the time.

With all the messes with air travel like delays and transport to and from the car and him not doing well sitting up, that may not be without some strain.

Sorry to hear OP. Can't be easy for ya

I know it's not the most convenient but I would lean towards driving him home.

Sound alike it's gonna be more comfortable for him and will give you a couple extra days with him as you drive back.

Thanks for all the replies.

Driving is A option but he definitely would prefer to fly. We've got the next 3/6/9+ months to reconnect whatever we need to. That drive would just suck. I'll definitely check other flight options.

Contact the airlines directly.
This will sound terrible, but they will clamor over the good will. Which ultimately, benefits your parent.

I apologize if I'm suggesting something you've probably already done, but just thinking out loud, I'd definitely want to check with his primary care physicians on questions about the safety of air travel. Thrombosis, blood clots, etc.

I've madE that drive with two smelly buddies in a single cab pickup, so i understand why it's not the first choice, but is doable and would give the option of stopping to adjust whenever necessary.

I'm sure these are similar but a guy I work with flies folks often for this organization. I'd highly recommend it for your dad.

Just wanted to chime in and say I'm sorry to hear this.

Just recently had to go through something very similar (not that long of distance).

This thread has already given you good advice. Contact the airlines directly...contact his physicians.

This wont be as simple as you think. And, just going to be real here...you need to get ready for him passing quickly once he is moved. It just seems to be the way of things. (Maybe not...I hope not...but just be ready for this being over much quicker than you think). You need to get his house in order. Understand his wishes...review his will (and how he wants it to work). Power of Attorney. Medical Power of Attorney.

He flies charity flights around the country for several organizations, but is based out of Southwest Houston Airport. Super awesome guy. He has moved cancer patients before.

If he cannot do it, he can help you find the right person or organization to help.

So sorry for this difficult situation. Just more information if it helps.

Delta does not fly nonstop from Baltimore to Houston. You would go through Atlanta.

Only SWA, United and Spirit (gasp) do.

United would be the only choice here and it would be a 737. In first class, it would not be lay flat seating.

All signs point to private jet or RV / sprinter van.

OP, you've got some great options with those organizations that fly patients. If you're in Sugar Land, I'd go by the Sugar Land airport over by the Skeeters stadium and ask around, someone there may know some folks who can help. We have a friend the keeps a King Air there, but if he can't sit up, I think you are going to have to look for someone/organization that has larger jets and things with the space to have him lay down. The King Air is still pretty cramped for that long a flight, and may not be able to make it without stopping for fuel.

No domestic lay flat into Houston on any carrier afaik. Only on a few lax/NYC flights
