Anyone have any recs for speakeasys or hidden bars in Houston? I've read about a couple (Capt. Foxhearts, FAO) but haven't ventured out to try any of them. Looking for something off the beaten path.

The one behind the mexican place on Main had a really fun "drinks before dinner date" vibe. 1920s Furniture and decor. The music made it feel straight out of Boardwalk Empire. I don't think it is there anymore though. I think it was called Tongue Cut Sparrow but moved next to Anvil in Montrose maybe? I wouldn't think its near the same as it was behind the hidden door on Main DT.

Haven't been to Meo Bar on Airline, but it's on the list.

Not sure if Kanpai Cluc counts as a speakeasy but it's a tiny cool bar.

Kanpai Club has great drinks for sure. I'm not sure if it qualifies here, but cool place.

Permission on White Oak is a great little place for a date night drink or hanging out with friends.

I actually went to one in the Spring area called The Blind Finch. We had a good time.

Mine is extremely exclusive and hard to get to. Literally no one can find it. It's called My Backyard.

Captain Foxheart's is awesome! Another great small place that is not really a speakeasy but is still a bit of a not-so-known joint is Houston Watch Company. Excellent whiskey selection and drinks.

C'mon man. TexAgs didn't exist until 1939, when Ag fans needed a place to complain about Homer Norton's all-run offense.

Refuge above Anvil. Ready Room in the Heights. Permission in Heights. Houston Watch Company is one of my favorites downtown and hasnt gotten as ghetto as some of the other ones downtown post covid…Miss Carousel in Eado is kinda cool too.

Coolest experience in Houston that I've had was at Emilia's Havana.

Entry is through the kitchen at The Annie behind a set of shelves covered in kitchen equipment, with an amazing rum-heavy menu and a few small plates. It's not cheap ($300 minimum for a couple) and there are 2 seatings per night. Live music from a 50's era Cuban band, rum fountain, and not a big room.

It was very cool to this decidedly uncool old and his very cool wife.

Disclosure: GM comped us.

Not gonna lie, this was a pretty cool little date spot back in the day. Blew my wife's mind first time I took her there.

This. They're also opening a speakeasy bar in the same location in the next few weeks (or it may already be opened).

I have a locker at Permission and I'm there at least once a week.

Coach Norton could have called one pass play and I'm still upset that Santa Clara scored 3 points.

And don't get me started with Villanova. Had to give up a touch down. My great grand father lost 100 dollars on that game.

And then she blew yours upstairs on those couches, right? Jk, I loved that place too. Used to live right around the corner of it. Always fun to walk over and hang with the girl at the time. Always fun people watching.

This place was purchased a few years ago. It sucks now.

Everything that was cool about it got choked out (not in the good way) of it by people who didn't understand what it was about in the first place.

100% correct, went in there exactly 1 time since the turnover, and it was flat awful. The look/feel was bad enough, and then the server mentioned bottle service, and we turned around and left. 0 stars, do not recommend!

That place was one local legend I never had any interest in attending. The way old people talked about it, it sounded like the sanitary conditions of Treasures but without any guarantees of service. And with much older people lingering around.

Wife and I went upstairs maybe once, and yeah there were a few people mugging down, and I hope they santized the seat cushions. But the actual bar/1st floor area was pretty cool and unique back around 2008-2011 and we always enjoyed it. Only an idiot would give it a complete overhaul, which it sounds like is what happened. The whole allure was that it was a mysterious little unmarked place in the side of a building that you could take people to and surprise them. My wife thought I was taking her through the back of a restaurant the first time we went.

Don't really remember a downstairs. We would walk over from birra porettis to just people watch. Never sat down.

Its terrible.

A friend and I tried to go in there (just to show her how terrible it has gotten since we used to underage drink there in high school in the 90s), and they were charging a cover...We didn't stay. We later learned was a cover charge for a swingers party.

It always had that element to it upstairs...but it was just an unspoken thing.

Overall...everywhere with everything...things just seem to be less cool.

I bet you could buy a distressed leather jacket and get the physical experience of swinging with the old people at Marfreless, without the obscure 1980s std's.
