Coltivare
Enoteca Rossa
Il Bracco
Are our go to spots

I tried Marmo recently and it wasn't bad.

I do have Amalfi and Ostia on my list of Italian spots to try.

I would like to add Da Vinci Ristorante in Katy. It's amazing. Very small, but it's as close to Italy that my wife and I have found since our honeymoon there.

We have been there several times and need to go again as it is so close by. Reservations and absolute must on weekends as it is pretty tiny, but every time service and food was exceptional.

I don't live in Houston and haven't been to near as many restaurants as some of you, but I have been to Palottas on 45 a couple of times and I really like it.

….opposite of best but since we're discussing Italian…some time (5-7 years ago)

A live roach crawled off my plate and onto the main bar at Via Emilia in the Woodlands. They apologized, comped the meal…yada yada. Cool story bro.

Years ago there was a place in Montrose called "La Mora Cucina Toscana" that was awesome. Veal saltimbocca there was the tits. Patranella's off Washington was an OG joint.

Is Mandola's Deli east of 45 near UH still around?

The gamberoni ala mostarda was fantastic there.

I took the wife to Damian's years ago and didn't come away that impressed.

Food was fine, but nothing super special. Atmosphere was lacking quite a bit. Something about the old carpet and acoustic ceiling tiles didn't scream "fine dining" to me.

I get that it has a long history in town, but feel like there are better options.

My parents love it. I never thought about it before, but looking like an old Downtown restaurant might actually be part of the draw for them.

Personallly, I'm willing to sacrifice some ambience points for traditional customer service.

Total side note, but I think Christie's seafood on Westheimer kind of falls into that groove of restaurants that are comfortable for my parents and I'm happy with the service.

Yeah, it's not a special destination point or anything, but it's fine if you're in the area. Traditional restaurant with a bar on the side. I'd go check it out at least once.

I've been eating at Mandola's since I was 5 when they used to be over on Broadway. Grabbed a quick sandwich on the way to pick someone up at Hobby this week.

Anyone eaten the fachia de vechia, face of the old lady at Mandolas deli? Actually sardine bread. Different but quite tasty and goes well with Christmas Seven Fishes dinner.

We used to make it. Basically focaccia with a very very VERY thin layer of tomato sauce on top, anchovies and a good hard Italian cheese grated on top. Pro tip? The tiny nubs of cheese you can't grate… stuff them into the holes in the focaccia dough.

I need to try theirs. My dad said his grandmother used to make it, but she and that tradition died off long before I was born. Apparently my dad and his siblings didn't like it, so nobody kept it up.

Right there with ya!!

I'm related to the Mandola's so there's a good chance their Faccia is very similar to what we used to make.

Ha! Definitely beat us on quantity. Gonna have to do it again the Christmas after skipping a couple years.

2020 was the first year we made it since I was a kid. Talked my mom into it and went to Pete's for supplies and a refresher course; they were awesome.

Oddly enough, it's my non-Sicilian mom who took it upon herself to learn from her in-laws to make fig cookies and other traditional foods for the holidays.

Man us too! Ever since my great grandmother passed in 2000 we hadn't made any. My cousin and I finally busted out the old recipe, went in together on a goo quality grinder and gave it a go in late 2020. Made enough for 2021 and part of 2022. Had to do it again this past Oct.

Thinking of inviting the extended family next year and rekindling the annual tradition officially.

Grew up friends with and spent alot of time as a kid at Mandolas deli. Just saw Joe this last weekend. Same dude has been making the lasagna there for 30+ years. he's got a meat market online for the sausage now.

Double Dave's? If so, where? There used to be one here on the Upper East Side in Atascocita but they couldn't get good help and poor customer service contributed to the decline. I would love to find good pepperoni rolls nearby but there's not one within 45 minutes of home now.

If not, Double Dave's where are those from?
The service at the one in Atascocita sucked, but it was better than nothing. Now we just order them from my parents house whenever we go to Bryan to visit.

Based on its listing in an earlier post, we went to Amore on S. Sheperd last evening.

Had some Potato Croquettes, very good. As was the Pappardelle, Strangozzi, Eggplant

Have definitely added this spot to our rotation.

I dunno. I felt like everything looked perfect but the food left quite a bit to be desired, atleast imo.
