1560 was so damn good. Best there's ever been by far in my opinion.

John and lance are the only ones I listen to now.
I agree, anyway...

1560 was great back in the day.

He's awful. He used to talk about how Roughned Odor was better than Altuve. What an absolute moron. When I called him on it years later he denied it. A dishonest moron.

The night shift on 610 from 7-11 with Matt Jackson and Jeremy Foster back around 2000 was my intro to sports radio. They cancelled their show for a nationally syndicated show that lasted a few months. I think they were out of Washington.

After that, 1560 around 2010 was awesome. Then 790 was like the middle ground of 1560 and 610 and I loved when Lance joined morning show there I think from like 2012-2016. Since then it all sucks to me.

Matt and Jeremy might go off on a tangent back then talking about Jessica Alba for 30 minutes.

And that was ok at the time.

1560 was awesome. Had a buddy who won a contest to have one of their station parties at your house. That was a fun night.

As I recall, it was bankrolled by Gow Media which had its sights set on being a big corporate radio company. Exactly what 1560 railed against. I guess it's not surprising that it was destined for failure.

I did like Josh Innes during and after the 2017 WS run. He would make fun of Shelia Jackson Lee and had great Sparky locker room celebration sound bites.

I kinda like the Matt Thomas show heading to lunch and Seth Payne isn't too bad.

Matt goes off topic too much and those guys like Ross somehow worked their way into a prime spot with little knowledge of the houston sports scene - it's too vanilla for me now as they speak on the same things and won't cover sports in the city -

I like what someone said about b list athletes - when they retire and get bored they'll strike up a friendship with a program director and get guests spots and then in a flash they'll bump someone who has been there for years - if JJ watt stays in Houston once he is done playing that's someone's job gone

Problem we have now is the scary Texans bought all the time and produce their own content. Early on you could call in and ask coaches questions - not anymore

I grew up in an era when the head coach had radio shows and then a late night in studio with an audience tv show and even players had shows you could call in to

Once they took the access away I lost interest

He may not but if someone like him chooses to we know they'll bump someone - and they tend to not get fired oddly enough

there is no "May". No chance in hell JJ doing local sports talk when he retires. You have a better chance of winning the power ball lotto.

But I get your point how a former athlete will trump a regular guy for a spot on a radio show.

Houston sports radio starts with John Breen and Jerry Trupiano. I'd listen to them on AM radio in my dorm on Northside.

Anita Martini and Mike Edmonds were great. Charlie and Rich before they just became caricatures. Dan Patrick, who was (and is) a total disgraceful clown. I remember a guy named John who was pretty good, would shuttle back and forth from KTRH to WFAN in NYC -- spokesman for A C Collins Ford in Pasadena. Ed Fowler was the crankiest man on the airwaves until he discovered golf - set up next to him many times on the range at Memorial while he smoked bad cigars while hacking away. Went on to become a pretty good minister, which required him to forget the countless vile words he growled on the driving range. Fran Blinebury, Dale Robertson were silly. Kenny Hand was and still is rather lame - my mother in law sees him at Cleburne regularly. 1560 was amazing. I was a fanatic listener to John and Lance and college football Wednesday but I haven't listened to local sports talk since. Pendergast is Kenny Hand's illegitimate son.

Yes. I am aware of the previous fire. I don't know what would prompt another one.

Speaking of George Mickelis's....did anyone ever go eat at George's off Washington. I think they are related. Old George passed last year. The place was a dump but his food was great and George was an awesome guy.

gotcha...I just took the comment as a tongue in cheek reference to another "accidental fire" if the business starts slipping.

no need to overthink it.

I'm confused...so there were two different George Mickelis's that owned second-generation restaurants within a couple miles of each other? How did I never know that.

THe problem with "sports talk" in Houston is that they take too many calls and talk about sports entirely too much.
If you say you hate the state of politics in this nation and you don't get involved in it, you obviously don't hate the state of politics in this nation.

Yes. And I think they were somehow related. One of my old managers used to take me around to all these places. There was some family feud that dated back to the old country if I remember correctly.

Also pour one out for the Triple A Diner on the loop.

That is awesome.
Ed's grandson and my kids went to the same school for awhile and Ed lived in my neighborhood. Marjorie asked him all the time to go to church with him and he'd just blow her off...hiding behind his job for most of it, until one Christmas Eve.

She was playing the piano, if I remember correctly, at a Christmas Eve service and she asked if he would come hear her play. He thought he would do her this favor and show how gracious he was and support her. He heard the gospel preached that night, was convicted of his sin, and was regenerated on the spot.

I really enjoyed my time with him.

Yeah, John O'Reilly... mentioned back towards the beginning of the thread. He was really good. Of course, I qualify my opinion by saying that I like sports radio guys that talk about sports, not strippers, pop culture crap and such. I guess that's why Pallilo's always been one of my favorites (along with working with him on the TV side, which I always enjoyed.)

The segments on KTRH with NFL and Draft expert Joel Buschbaum were always a highlight, despite Joel's nasaly, droning, completely unenthusiastic delivery. That guy was really ahead of his time in NFL Draft analysis.

Charlie Palillo was obsessed with talking about whether Houston could support an NHL team. He'd raise that issue at least once a month. I would be super bowl week and Charlie would be daydreaming on air about NHL.

I enjoy BK on the 97.5 afternoon show. He is a sip, but he is balanced and his takes are good. He is smarter than most. Took me a bit to warm up to that show, but it is ok now. I don't like that they usually just stay on the big topics and waaaaaay too much Texans talk, but they are just starting. The other two guys on the show are ok, I guess.

My favorite segments were Lance's characters:

Tony the Hatchet man Valentine
SEC Guy
Rappin' Dad
______ on a Mobile (RC, Mack Brown, Milo)

John and Lance are the only duo that can come close to what The Ticket puts out. I hate Dallas and everything it stands for, but their sports radio is very good.
