My favorite segments were Lance's characters:

Tony the Hatchet man Valentine
SEC Guy
Rappin' Dad
______ on a Mobile (RC, Mack Brown, Milo)

John and Lance are the only duo that can come close to what The Ticket puts out. I hate Dallas and everything it stands for, but their sports radio is very good.

Lance doing the old time radio reporter character that gave a news blurb about Rice getting a new gym, Autry Court, that was built out of asphalt and gravel, was hilarious.

Lance's "keep'em fresh" bit about the Texans rotating linemen so they stay fresh (but they're constantly having to sprint 40 yards on and off the field) was an all-timer.

Edit - Holy crap. Quick google search turned it up.

Hearing John and Lance together is like going home again. So great together.

My parents sat next to Rich Lord and his wife at a concert a few months ago with only a vague idea who he was. They said he told them he was forced to retire but had no regrets, but absolutely hated working with Josh Innes, which isn't very surprising.

I've said it before, but nothing tops the time I had the radio on and a guy called Charlie Palillo wanting to trade Hakeem straight up for Dino Radja and Charlie hanging up on him and saying, "Everyone gets an opinion, but I can't condone idiots."

Yeah I'm not a huge Palillo fan - but I loved the way he didn't suffer fools.

Porkchop Express- That call was me and my buddies! This is crazy and I can't believe somebody remembers, or even heard the call. That Phone call to Charlie Palillo was after a Rockets/Celtics game, and we did the call in to Charlie as a total joke. We were still in HS, and had to be around 93 or 94? If I remember correctly, we were laughing at all the dumb trade calls, so we decided to make one ourselves to get Charlies reaction. I think we also made a comment about Hakeem playing the Clarinet, as a dumb inside joke to our friend who played the clarinet. What a blast from the past your post was!

Were you doing an accent that made you sound like a 75-year-old Italian guy from the Bronx?

Admittedly, yes. Not quite sure what accent my buddy, doing the talking, was trying to pull off. I think he was making something goofy up on the fly.

Thanks, that was a good read (which I had saved and finally remembered). Good stuff.

Between his work with PFW and his highly anticipated radio work with KMOX in St. Louis and KTRH in Houston, Buchsbaum planted the seed for what we see today.
I figured he was like a syndicated expert or something; didn't know his relationship with KTRH was special.

Not many people actually knew what Buchsbaum looked like, and only a handful of people ever saw the inside of his apartment, which was so messy and disorganized his mother refused to come visit.
His picture in that article is pretty much exactly as I would have pictured him.

I think McClain visited him and his dad on a NY trip and wrote about him and had a photo of him in the Chron way back when.

I remember Buck the Wonder Dog well. And Brooks. Joel Buchsbaum on KTRH is one of those wonderful "this could have only happened in Houston in that specific moment" things.

To be fair, I was also listening to Jack Pardee's Oilers call in show one weeknight when they took a call from a guy that said, "Hey coach. Love what you do. Can't stand Warren Moon. He's a dumb <nword> who spends all his time in bars chasing <blanco gato, in the vernacular> and he needs to go." Hosts were quiet for about ten seconds then went on to the next call.

Pure Houston.

Slocum on a Mobile called in to the Zone 1150 post game show after some Aggie home game some years back.

Louie Bellina and the other hosts were just blown away that he showed up like that. They loved it!

John and Lance back in my post college years in Houston (2002-2005) before I moved away was great. I can't remember what name they used, but remember when they setup a draft workout for a fake RB from Rice?

Forget about sissy Nick being on 610 back in the day. He was/is terrible. He's white guy who wishes he was black and wishes he was a Stephen a smith copycat. Brutal listening to home. That dude was a hard core race baiter.

Back when John Lopez and Nick had the morning show, it was pretty good, IMO. Coupled with Jim Mudd and it was the best morning sports show in Houston, IMO. John was like the childish adult and Nick was the stats guy who tried to bring structure. They seemed to have a pretty good rapport with each other and found a good balance for the show. But yeah, the race **** got old, quickly.

The only sports show I've found that has the same feel is on SiriusXM's College Sports channel with Rick Neuheisel and Chis Childers. I wish they had a video feed, because I can often feel the disappointment in Rick's voice from some of the stuff Chris says. It's like a father trying to raise his son and failing.
