The Mt. Rushmore thread joked about some radio days. I figured it would be better to start another thread than derail that one.

Back when I started listening in the early '90's, it was awesome. Over the years I'd listen to a mix of the following:

Ed Fowler
Rich Lord
Charlie Palillo
Lane Z
John Granato

I am likely missing a name or two, but it's been several years since I listened, mainly because I haven't lived in Houston since 2004.

Who's left?
Is the sports radio scene any good?
Is Howard in Memorial still a thing?

Thanks. I'll hang up and listen...

Seems like every show has the same format: Take B-List former football player (preferably a former Texans player) and pair him with someone who wishes he was a B-List former football player, and let them talk about non-sports stuff for four hours.

Payne/Pendergast
Stoerner/Hughley
etc.

Good topic, anyway...

Fowler and Lord are both retired. Palillo was most recently on ESPN 97.5 but drew terrible ratings so he was canned. John and Lance are back together on ESPN 97.5 and are the only show worth listening to in my opinion.

610 is so Texans centric since they are the flagship for the Texans and none of their personalities are noteworthy. 790 has been hit or miss over the years but they do get great radio hits since they are the flagship for the Astros.

Sports radio is just bad in general in Houston. It's not worth listening to unless you live in NYC, Boston, Chicsgo or Philly for the most part. John and Lance buck the trend of lame ducks in Houston but I'd otherwise listen to sports centric podcasts.

When i was young and first moved to town we had Barry Warner. 1970-80s He was so bad but he established the level. All these guys today are far superior to "the mouth of the south". They dont seem so bad. Either that or i just dont care anymore

Sports radio in this town doesn't deserve a Mt Rushmore.

Seriously I can't think of 4 guys deserving.

It's so sad

I had an extended work project in the Los Angeles area in early 1994 and listened to Rome back then. Then, when he came to the Houston airwaves, I listened almost everyday.

then you might remember my friend "Bama in H-Town". He won the fax-of-the-day quite often by sending in his takes. The guy is a true Bama fan and quite funny as you'd expect. Rome would send him gifts periodically to keep the funny fax-of-the-days coming in. His best gift was a pair of boxing gloves signed by Muhammed Ali.

Barry was awesome. He just didn't give a **** if you liked, or agreed with him. Plus, he had connections all over the US. He was the Genesis of sports talk radio in Houston.
The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But, it's still on the list.

The faxes that Bama sent were incredible! He was a riot!

His fax about the death penalty had Rome laughing so much he could barely get thru it. It was excellent.

Agreed that Barry was awesome. He knew a hell of a lot about football and had great connections. Barry was the guy who set-up the infamous lunch between Fran Blinberry and Ladd Herzog at Tony's that resulted in a drunken brawl.

Anita co-hosted with Mike Edmonds - both were milk toast.

Ed Fowler was as crusty as they come but his show was pretty good until you could tell he just got tired of pro sports, and only wanted to talk about golf. Had at least two co-hosts - John O'Reilly and Jerry Trupiano. Both were great. Ed was also one of the best sports columnists ever in Houston. You could argue he was the best.

I do have a strong memory.

I could probably rewrite that particular fax pretty close to word for word. It was that memorable.

Tell him thanks for making a lot of people laugh back in the day.

Also tell him this:

Football has the Bowdens: Bobby, Terry, and Tommy.

Death has the Bush Brothers.

Equally as epic as his death penalty fax was his fax about the greatness that is a 24-hour Super Wal-Mart.

I wonder if those are archived on stucknut.com somewhere.

I couldn't remember if Jerry Trupiano was ever a regular host or just a drop-in for stories and analysis. I know he did tons of play by play going back to the 70's, even some college football for the SWC network. I guess his talk show must've been a little before my sports talk listening days.

Loved Barry Warner's curmudgeony takes. He had an evening show around 2010 or 11, I actually called in when he was asking what changes we'd want the new owner to make to the Astros or something. I said rip out Tal's Hill. Barry agreed w/ me and went on a long rant about it, so I'll take partial credit for its eventual removal.

Matt Thomas and Jim Kozimor in the mornings in the late 90s were a good pair. But Kozimor got a little douchy before splitting to Seattle.
