Is anyone paying attention to the last 5 words in this tweet? "A new arena in Houston."?

Think he means new venue as in Toyota Center.

Yeah thats what I took it as too. Hockey wouldn't need an arena of its own. Plenty of teams share with an NBA team:

Dallas, Denver, DC, Detroit, NYC, Boston, Philly, Chicago, LA

That and Tilman already owns the lease on the Toyota center. So moving the team here really cost him nothing.

My favorite annual Houston Sports news cycle event: The NHL might come here story.
Sets right up for when college football regular season ends, the Texan's season is a raging dumpster fire as usual, the Rockets once again prove irrelevant, and, for good measure, the Dynamo has ended yet another feckless campaign finishing bottom of the MLS-west table and long out of the US Open Cup.

I think that's most likely what he meant as well. It just seems that if "new arena" means a different arena in another town, it's a little redundant.

It is absolutely redundant, but in context of the Coyotes situation their biggest hurdle in staying in the Phoenix area is finding an arena to play in. Glendale kicked them out due to unpaid rent. The Suns arena can physically host hockey games, but its an odd setup where one end would have no lower seating and the ive seen photos where the upper deck at that end cant even see the goal from their seats. Plus I doubt the Suns want to share space. So i can see how someone reporting on the Coyotes would use the words new arena as what the Coyotes need is a new home. Not a new building from scratch.

The Toyota Center and Gila River Arena are the same age. So it can't really be about the arena itself.

They're working on a proposed new arena along the Salt River in Tempe. Not sure if that's going to happen but it's in the works.

The team has been trying to build a new $2 billion arena and mixed-use development on a waste disposal site in Tempe. Not only has this upset nearby Sky Harbor Airport, which says such development would interfere with its flight pattern, but it only bolstered rumors that the team might move to another city. The owner of the NBA's Houston Rockets is actively seeking an NHL team for his hockey-ready Toyota Center, and rumors have connected the Coyotes to that plan.

They can keep the name coyotes and just change what its in reference to. Not sure how you turn a border smuggler in to a logo though.

Maybe he'll choose to be Arizona's problem and move Lakewood to the Glendale arena and we can put hockey back into the Summit!

I don't give a **** what they would be called, but bring hockey back to Houston. This straight. white, gun owning, republican male loves him some hockey.

So true. Gordie Howe and his sons...but the best (beast) was Terry Ruskowski . So many fights....so crazy.
I was in the room here one day... watchin' the Mexican channel on TV. I don't know nothin' about Pele. I'm watchin' what this guy can do with a ball and his feet. Next thing I know, he jumps in the air and flips into a somersault and kicks the ball in - upside down and backwards... the dang (sc) goalie never knew what the hell hit him. Pele gets excited and he rips off his jersey and starts running around the stadium waving it around his head. Everybody's screaming in Spanish. I'

This sets up well for the team moving. Whether the sale to Fertitta would be required is a completely other set of concerns, but from a PR standpoint, this dispute opens the door.

Current Coyote's ownership can express frustration at the city, say they did all they could but ultimately were locked out of their building despite good faith attempts and really, they had no choice but to sell.

This aligns everyone's public statements plausibly and makes the bankers' scuttlebutt entirely reasonable too.

Since I want this to happen, this is how I'm talking myself into believing it more...

Sure does feel like you're crossing over a line where the NHL has to step-in and force the sale/relocation...some of this arena stuff feels like PR cover for something that's already a Fait Accompli.

Never seen anything like this before in Houston....unless you count the ol' "Oh, look at this patch of turf here before this preseason game....we can't play on this! This stadium is a joke, we need to move!"

Loved the Howes ... they are who got me interested in hockey as a kid. But man, Terry Ruskowski was a bad ass. Little guy with a big mustache who wasn't afraid of anyone.

Exactly, the old "our hands were tied, really sorry for our fans" to be able to keep doing business in town without getting the Bud Adams treatment.

Seems like would be a great opportunity for another city to welcome them in with a venue to finish the the season. Then just hang on to it.

To be fair…

That Oilers "game" was the last one my dad ever took me to. I remember sitting there for what felt like forever while some old guy with a radio and headphones was filling us in on what everyone was staring at on the turf.
