Might as well head to Post Oak or the internet.

Memorial City ain't bad. That's our choice if we have to go to a mall in the area.
I just refuse to go to Memorial City. Its a miserable experience and there are zero stores worth visiting.

Also, your quote points out the core problem with malls: Once people thought of them as fun, entertaining places to spend an afternoon. Now, they are something to be endured if you MUST go in one.

Out of curiosity, I might drop by the Woodlands Mall to see what its like today. A couple years back I went there for some necessity and it felt like I was the only shopper in the indoor portion (the outdoor area they added on last seems to get some traffic).

You answered your own question. Woodlands mall is the only mall left in the area that still looks like what malls used to look like.

There's also Hong Kong mall on Bellaire for when you want pho, jerky, crawfish in the food court, and grocery shopping.

It's not ghetto.

Some people seem to think that a large percentage of non-white shoppers is the same thing as "ghetto".

No. That's NOT what they mean; they are referring to the socioeconomic status of the shoppers. And the wisdom of the apparent life choices and evident spending habits. People of all races and creeds can be ghetto.

If someone thinks the galleria or memorial city are ghetto, they are a snowflake of the gentlest variety.

So where on your snowflake chart does someone being a snowflake about people being snowflakes about malls fall exactly?

Just curious....

Yeah but come on... you know that if it were poor white people, most people's initial thoughts are 'blue collar' and probably not 'ghetto'.

So, if you look at a Venn diagram with only 2 circles, and within that Venn diagram you have racists who don't like non white people, and in the other circle you have people who don't like people from very low socio-economic classes, there will be significant overlap between the people not l8ked by the folks in those 2 circles. There will even be some overlap, some people may be in both Venn diagrams. But that doesn't mean that having issues with people of low socio economic status makes you racist and it doesn't mean that being racist means you have issues with people of low socio economic status.

To clarify, I'm happy to hang around talking with my black neighbor and happily do so for extended periods of time. No way in hell do I want to hang around with my nephew's white-trash girlfriend. It has nothing to do with skin color. But she's trashy and I don't hang out with her, gross. Oh, and for the record, it's also not because she's poor. It's because she's trashy. Its not just the economic part, its also the values part.

Not saying it does make anybody racist and of course you pick and choose people based on whether you like them or not after you get to know them.

All I'm saying is people tend to make the snap judgments around who has made active poor life choices and who is poor and who isn't around people who don't look like themselves and I include myself in that category.

You are right. First impressions matter. People judge you based upon your grooming, attire, soeech, and how you carry yourself.

Dress like a hooker and I'm probably going to suspect that you are a hooker. Act like a WT con artist and I'm probaby going to assume you are one.

Black dude wearing pastel shorts, tucked in button down shirt, and boat shoes, I would guess that he's a frat boy wannabe who grew up in the 'burbs.

White dude wearing saggy jeans, chains around the neck, and flat-bill hat, I would think he's a ghetto ass.

My second job is real estate. It was always meant to pay for my life...and when it did...I built a very expensive house that has thrown off my plans.

I go occasionally to Galleria and don't have any issues and seems to be doing okay (pre Covid). Curious if it is different now.

Sugarland is more Slumdog millionaire than "ghetto". My indian coworkers call the area Patelfair for a reason.

First Colony Mall isn't completely terrible, but it definitely doesn't line up with the ethnic and socioeconomic makeup of Sugar Land.

Indoor shopping malls aren't being built anymore are they? They are such miserable places and always have been.
2006 was the last time a major new mall was constructed in the US. Free AC and heating attracts loiterers, and the loiterers tend to drive away customers. Stores can't justify high mall rent, especially with lower foot traffic, so they're fleeing malls too. Or at least going to "outdoor" malls where they can ask loiterers to leave the store. Loiterers aren't interested in hanging out outside in the heat (south) or cold (north).

I went to the Galleria for the first time yesterday in probably 3-4 years. The number of neck tattoos, Lycra skin tight dresses and heavy old chains seems to have dramatically increased.

Top things you see at galleria:

1. Quincineras

2. Some sort of talent scout or dance competition at the Westin

3. Wealthy Mexican nationals on shopping spree

4. Gypsy kiosk attendants

5. Some major store getting liquidated / gutted
