I was recently contacted about a position at their corporate office but other than their billboards I don't know squat about Perry Homes. I'm not in the market to buy a house which is what 99% of the reviews you find online pertain to.

Hoping that someone on Texags knows someone that works there or is familiar enough with the company to opine on taking a job there. FWIW it's an HR job.

Thanks!

From a recently departed colleague who was in sales...

It can be very political, especially at the corporate level. They have no problem screwing over customers and are never afraid to lawyer up to wear people down if they have to. It's a great place to work if you have no conscience and like making money.

Literally every for-profit company.

It can be very political, especially at the corporate level = I wasn't very good at my job and didn't get all the perks of the successful people.

I used to work in sales for a building services supplier. Checked the LinkedIn profiles of the Perry folks I used to work with and they are all still there. 14 and 7 years for those two folks. The home building industry tends to be a big game of musical chairs and lots of people end up switching companies every 2-3 years. I'd think Perry does a better job than some other builders at recognizing talent and trying to hold onto it.

Used to be you could only wear white or blue dress shirts at the office.

Not sure if that has changed since Bob passed.

Thanks rillo, info like this does give a peek into a company culture.

Professional dress code at the office, but everyone has been work from home the last year.

I worked there for 4 years (2009-2013). Interesting company to work for and I learned a lot about the industry. I'm sure the culture has changed a bit since Mr. Perry passed (everyone referred to him as "Mr." and some of the other executives were also referred to as "Mr." around the office). It was a pretty conservative workplace at that time, everyone had to wear a white shirt and tie but they provided free lunch for all office employees every day. Saved me a lot of money.

They definitely have their way of doing things but they have been successful.

Just curious what role you are looking at there?

Maybe you can help with this:

Perry Homes caused this flooding

...and then sued the homeowners for...being in the way of their run-off?

The person I mentioned in my 2nd post was directly involved in this.

Worked there straight out of college as an Asst. Project Manager for about 3 years. Good company, but definitely more of a corporate environment. They are very well organized, spit out houses like a well-oiled machine.

"In the lawsuit, the company has denied culpability and noted that Elm Grove and the proposed subdivision lie within the 100-year flood plain."

A quote from Perry. There are so many things wrong with this quote, and it's only one of the many lies and deflections that Perry has engaged in to avoid responsibility. Maybe some of you could stomach it or might need the paycheck bad enough, but it would be hard to work for a company that is quantifiably run by sorry human beings. All of the stuff they did to cause this flooding has been documented by multiple examples of aerial photography, eyewitness accounts, Montgomery County records...yet they continue to blame the residents. Some of Elm Grove is in the 100 year plain. I lived there for 16 years, and my home was placed in the 100 year after Allison. It didn't flood during Allison or Harvey, but it flooded during the piddling spring 2019 flood, and again in Imelda. You can see exactly where Perry filled in the bayou and didn't build the detention, and clear cut the wetlands, and the main street where all the runoff flowed right into Elm Grove.

As an aside,It was a beautiful neighborhood, and still is. If you look on Zillow, you might see that it's the most affordable suburban housing in all of Houston.

I've done work for a lot of developers, and Perry isn't any worse than any of the others, and actually a little above average. I was approached to work for them, but they required us to have a full size SUV less than 5 years old (I think I remember that correctly). They don't pay enough to dictate what kind of car I drive. But I've also turned down a company that required a suit and tie every day because their pay differential didn't cover the dry cleaning bill. Make sure to ask about those kinds of things if you do interview.

I worked at Perry for several years before leaving Texas. I didn't interact much with corporate, and a job there would be much different than working in the field.

They are a for profit company and operate as such, but being private and carrying the Perry name across all products for 50+ years they do put more of an emphasis on quality and customer satisfaction. I would recommend working there.

At least they finally sold the land to the county & city. Too bad it will be years before they make flood improvements to the land.

Good summary and more detail

Yes, I'm glad the land purchase was done. However, FEMA should be suing Perry Homes.

Their corporate office is on the gulf freeway right near hobby airport (9000 Gulf Freeway). Not the greatest area in terms of surroundings but there was a gated parking lot and there was always HPD officer guarding the front door.

I heard once that a crazy man with a gun was able to gain entry to Bob Perry's office (although Perry wasnt there at the time).

The top floor (3rd) is where Mr. Perry's office was and also the employee lunchroom. They told us to be very quiet in the hallways when we were going to the lunchroom and also only walk to the right when you get off the elevator - not the left which was toward his office.

I remember seeing the plans for the buildout of the office space and it looks like he had his own private bathroom within his office suite.

IIRC in the main lobby there was a photo of the Twin Towers. Not sure if it's still there.

There's now a big Perry Homes sign on the building but it wasnt added until recently, before it was very non-descript.

OP did you end up interviewing with them?

I worked at Allen Stanford's old office building on Westheimer and we got to see the place before they gutted it.

His private office had its own driveway which led straight to a back entrance. His private bathroom had a shower big enough for 10 people. I'm guessing the guy had a lot of fun in that office before things came crashing down.

Is there something odd about the CEO having his own bathroom in office?

Lest we forget the epic tooth brusher thread, who wouldn't want to share a bathroom with that ?

How can employees trust a CEO who won't poop alongside them?

Conversely, how can employees respect a CEO if they have to listen to him destroy his anus on a daily basis?

It's like a double edge sword

Thanks for all of the great insights from you and the others on the thread. The hiring manager really liked me but apparently I did not impress the trio of HR personnel. They had tenures of 7, 12, and 18 years with the company so their opinions carried more weight internally than the hiring manager who has only been there for a few months.

Honestly it was an answered prayer because I had already made the decision to get out of the rat race and enrolled in a home inspection program the day before I got the call from Perry. While it always stings a little to not get picked, it's made it much easier to move forward confidently in my new career.
