In early 1985, Welch was a leader in the opposition to the extension of job protection rights to homosexuals employed by the city government. Welch came back that year to run against incumbent Mayor Kathy Whitmire, who had served since 1982, in the Houston Mayoral Elections. Some of his comments (namely his candid quote caught by a microphone on live television, suggesting that one way to curb the spread of HIV would be to "shoot the queers") upset the city's gay community.[6] The Houston GLBT Political Caucus supported Whitmire, his opponent in the race. She went on to defeat him in that race, remaining the city's mayor until the early 1990s.[6]
I heard Welch make that comment live on TV. He was about to be interviewed by someone on Channel 13, wasn't aware it was a hot mic, and definitely said "shoot the queers." Couldn't believe he said it and knew right then his campaign was dead just a few days before the election.

I heard about Dean Corll/Elmer Wayne Henry and John Gacy growing up. Had never heard of John Paul Norman until the documentary, but found it very creepy that he had connections to both Houston and the Chicago suburbs. Some very sick stuff in that documentary as others have mentioned.

I mean, WTF was law enforcement doing? It's not like they were caught up battling the cocaine wars in Miami in the 80's. Too busy busting kids smoking pot or cracking on the gays cruising Montrose??
doesn't sound like you guys are too far off

Welch was mayor in 1967 when two days of siege by the Houston police at predominantly black Texas Southern University. A police officer was accidentally killed by another police officer. Many Texas Southern students were taken into custody. The events created a rift between the administration and many of Houston's African Americans. In 1968, Welch's last term was marred by controversy, being that his second mayoral bid was financed by questionable sources. It was rumored that his campaign was associated with organized crime with a handful of his cabinet coming under suspicion and indicted as a result of this link. Welch's reputation came under fire because of his friendships with well known crime leaders.

I find it highly ironic that a school is still named after Welch, who pissed all the AAs off because of the Texas Southern fiasco.

Its like the cretins who run HISD forgot to do their homework and instead went after libtard dog whistle school names.

He was a great guy by most accounts and had longtime impact on local government and the business community. Started out as an outsider candidate running against the machine.

it is my hypothesis that in the modern day, we have a whole less of these guys, but a lot more psychos wanting their fame and getting the instant gratification of a mass shooting.

I dont know about you guys, but I'll absolutely take the mass shooting over the serial killer molester torture people.

odd "would you rather" scenario you've painted here, but you are correct that serial killing have gone down

With surveillance what it is now, more advanced home security, mobile phones and easier ways to locate people at basically any time, I think this stuff exists less straight up because it has got to be much harder to pull off now than it was in the 70's and 80's.

I thought I read somewhere that a big part of Ted Bundy being able to do what he did had to do with the fact that States at the time basically had no mode to nor even tried to communicate with one another when it came to missing persons and sharing persons of interest in those cases.

So I dunno... terrible to say but maybe the new serial killer is the mass shooter.

I was talking to a buddy with teenagers about this one time. I feel bad sometimes for kids today who don't get the unstructured downtime away from the family to wander off with friends and be detached from mommy and daddy for a while with no cellphones to check in until the time when you're expected to physically check in. But they probably are much safer. It's hard to escape the all seeing eye of the SAHM.

For my bsc older sisters, the cellphone is just a high-tech umbilical cord and they freak out when they don't have instant response.

It's crazy to think 30 years ago you'd call someone and if they didn't answer you'd just hang up and go on about your life.

Thats a good point. I think a lot of anxiety and anger in the world is caused by peoples electronic umbilical cord.

People can cause stress remotely, anytime, anywhere.

People getting in traffic accidents because someone was blowing up their phone wanting to know where they are at.

People flying off the handle at work because of some stress inducing text or email, which 20 years ago they would have just handled when they got home.

People rushing through work projects and making mistakes because you might have 10 inquiries coming in by text, phone, email wanting to know the status of **** and people nowadays expect an immediate response.

If any younger guys are reading this and wondering how they can be single at my age, I recommend taking a pretty casual approach to phonecalls and text messages.

Whats crazy is we are in constant connection with all facets of life at the same time and in real time.

Imagine a office worker sitting at their desk, stressing out when they get a notification on their phone that their mortgage payment going up due to taxes and insurance.

This is traditionally business that would be handled at home. News would come through the mail.

It's probably even crazier to think 30 years ago, you'd call someone at all relative to just texting them today.

Realistically speaking, take work out of the equation, how much communication does anybody actually even communicate now by phone call vs text message anymore?

I cant even imagine attempting to date these days. I haven't been out of the scene quote a decade but it seems like the worst undertaking out there, trying to create new and/or meaningful relationships with the vast majority of women today.
I just laughed out loud....only because I'd go out of my mind if I had to do that. Sheesh

In the mid-90's very few of my friends had cell phones...and a few had pagers obviously. If I couldn't connect with any of my friends on their landline to see what was going on that night, i'd literally cruise around to the usual suspect hangout spots or until I saw a caravan of broncos and K-5 blazers that could lead me to the party. Sometimes this would be hours of driving around like a creep with my head on a swivel looking for people I knew.

I miss those days.

And just in general, sometimes you had to wait by yourself and just think for long periods of time. No personal computer in your hand to entertain or distract you 24/7. If I could snap my fingers and make it 1994, or better yet, 1986, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Sounds like maybe your friends didn't want you know where they were going. I don't recall regularly driving around for hours looking for cars I recognized.

Explaining probability to math students, a common barrier today is that when faced with problems about a "standard deck of cards", kids are only vaguely familiar with the ranks, suits, etc. Even at the college level.

No family road trips stuck playing solitaire in the back of a suburban or station wagon.

Just finished the podcast, their was/is no doubt their is a nationwide sex trafficking ring that John David Norman led. I'd imagine more bodies exist. People assumed these
Kids were runaways, many were gay and if they weren't once the told the public that many of the victims were gay, many of the families sadly didn't want to have their kid outed as potentially gay, it made this all the more difficult

Has anyone heard of the Houston 'Icebox Murders'?

Was born here and had never heard of this case until a few years ago when someone mentioned that they lived on the same street as the Icebox Murder house.

The suspect was an Aggie. Enrolled at A&M in 1942.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Rogers_(murder_suspect)

Don't read unless you want to be thinking about this case for the next few days.

Just read an article that today is the 48th anniversary of Corll's death and theatre they are about to start searching for bodies again.

Prolific serial killer Dean Corll was shot dead 48 years ago today. A search will soon begin for the remains of any additional victims.

Somebody should look at historical arial photos of The Heights to determine the exact location of Corll's candy factory.

It was somewhere around W 22nd street near Helms Elementary.

I'd start by looking in and around that area with ground penetrating radar or maybe some sort of seismic technology.

The stories of neighbors saying that Corll was digging holes in and around the shop to bury spoiled candy are well documented.

Also reports by neighbors of Corll pouring a lot concrete slabs around the the shop.

IMO, its more likely than not that somebody owns a townhouse with Corll victims still buried underneath it.

Then he entered the Army for 10 months before getting discharged for hardship to help his family.

All of those addresses have been demolished for townhouses.
