seriously. who could be angry about the state of BBQ? especially in our fair city.

5 years ago, BBQ debates involved Goode Co vs. Demeris.
A little longer than that, but it is the truth. Tine BBQ was pretty weak. Gatlin's, Virgie's, Roegel's and ????

Speaking of, during the height of the rona shut down, I wanted to support old-time local (and they've got a lot of connections to my kids' school and A&M), so went to Demeris for pick up. Ooof.
Pizzitola's had good ribs back in the day, but yeah the pickings were pretty slim way back when (20 years ago). Used to hit up Luling City Market on Richmond.
This was our rotation from work circa 1998. Ribs at Pizzatolas and then brisket at Luling...sausage wasn't bad either.

Netflix has a series called Chef's Table: BBQ. It has Tootsie from Snow's, Rodney Scott in South Carolina, and Lennox Hastie from Australia. It is outstanding.

Tootsie is a fascinating woman.

Yes. I literally cried during Tootsie and Rodney's episodes. Man, Tootsie has lived a life. Wow. So much profound depth to her and to her craft.

Just watched this last night. Great episode! I feel like Tootsie could whoop my @ss with the guns she has from shoveling coal all those years!

If you're in the Tomball area I recommend giving Bexar BBQ a try. They started as a trailer at the Tomball Farmer's Market and now have a brick and mortar.

Where at? How do they compare to Tejas?

Over at Medical Complex and Bus 249; Gianni's shopping center. It's a different style from Tejas, but I wouldn't be shocked to see it make the next big Texas Monthly List. Their staples are all good. I'd recommend having the "candied ends" when ya go.

I'm not a fan of Tejas. Sides are really good but I don't think the brisket hits the mark. Thanks for the heads up on Bexar, I may go there tomorrow.

Looked on Google maps. It's next to the Whataburger that's been there forever and the old Klein bank. Going to have to give it a try.

It's where the wine bar was in the center with Gianna's next to Amegy Bank.

Do you eating gods have any recommendations in Victoria or on between there and Houston?

I'll probably stop at Prasek's just to see the sausage version of Buc-ee's.

Seems like a promising option

Thanks, may check that out. I usually methodically plan my trips by scanning google maps for restaurants or historic sights, but missed that one.

I love Prasek's, but like you already know, it is for sausage not brisket. But I'll give you a tip -- get your sausage to go for later, and get the patty melt for dine in.

Yeah, I'll bring a cooler to do some shopping on the return drive.

I'll drive for a good reuben. May try Fossati's deli in Victoria too, although their yelp reviews aren't promising.

Hows Praseks breakfast? Headed to SA early in the morning and might stop for kolaches or tacos if better than Bucees.

Of course. They use good sausage instead of hot dog weenies

Speaking of which, I had the tv on one of the food channels and the other day and Guy went to a Hruska's in Salt Lake City. Some members of the younger generation went to college there and stayed to colonize.

Get the Reuben at liebmans deli at I-10 gessner.
Its on buttered toasted marble rye, good proportion of pastrami to kraut. It's not as super piled high like Kenny and ziggys.

Thanks for that suggestion. The Whataburger I had for breakfast (or the beer I had for dinner last night) didn't leave me with a real big appetite for burgers or brisket today, so the Prasek's reuben hit the spot. Good hearty slices of grilled pastrami, but not too greasy. Also came home w/ a cooler full of sausage varieties. \

Now that I see how easy that 59 S drive is (as opposed to Fittynine North into East Texas), I'll probably make a few daytrips here and there to try some different spots.

Agree. Candied ends are the best thing on the menu that I have tried.

They also made candied ends out of their pork belly this weekend, hopefully they bring that back as I didn't get a chance to try them.

If you're in Houston, the homies at Khoi have been turning out some good barbecue over the past year or so. Pop-ups only though.

Saw that Ronnie Killen dragged his sac on Levi Goode and opened a Killens BBQ right across the street from the Goode Co BBQ/Cantina in the Woodlands

i went to the new Killen's bbq the weekend before last. really good stuff! it's in the old Culver's.

"The pop-up was busier than any pop-up I'd ever had with the first restaurant," Killen says. "Doing demographics on the area as far as what's out there. There's Goode Co. across the street, but what we do is different."
from an older article. Basically said there's no BBQ in the Woodlands...then acknowledges Goode Co. in a backhanded sort of way.

oh im sure Killens will blow Goode out of the water in the BBQ market there ... i still like cantina though.
