Police chief just asked people who felt the blast nearby to look around homes for debris or body parts that may be related to the explosion.

Woke us up in Montrose. Heard what sounded like an explosion and saw the sky light up briefly even though our bedroom windows face East. Both kids slept right Through it.

Walked my whole damn house to make sure it wasn't something more localized.

ABC 13 is taking this a little too far. Trying to spin this into a discussion regarding the dangers of having too many chemical plants in Houston. This isn't a plant explosion..

ETA: now trying to warn people off from looting...give me a break

Looking at that video of that man's house 1/4 mile away with the all the sheetrock damage and thought, there's some going to be some serious structural damage in addition to all the roof and window damage on 100's of homes and businesses.

I hope this company has good insurance ,because this is going to cost someone millions and millions.

Probably depends on if you were awake and how lightly you sleep. We're at Mason a little North of 10, and my wife was already up and heard it but didn't know what it was. I slept through it.

Dude's sheet rock was already falling off. He just found a way for someone else to pay for it.

I was sleeping at the time so I didn't feel anything, but my dog sure did and proceeded to wake up everyone in the house barking.

Reminds me of the natural gas explosion that happened in Brenham back in roughly 1991 that I felt in my house in Missouri City.
I must just be a very sound sleeper. I live 10 miles just northwest of this one (Jersey Village area) and slept through it. I was in College Station in 91 and slept through that one too!

We lived in Bryan when the Brenham explosion happened. I remember walking from the dining room to the kitchen to put my cereal bowl in the sink and it felt like someone lifted the carpet under me and then set it back down. My dog made a weird "what was that?!?!" bark.

I guess I was really tired last night. I'm usually a pretty light sleeper and almost always wake up at least once through the night.

Got up this morning and actually commented to my wife that I slept right up to my alarm. Didn't have a clue about this until now.

We live in the heights, I was just passed the hell out.

I live over near Bear Creek and slept right through it. I was in CS for the 1991 Brenham one and was awake enough to hear it rattle my bedroom door against the frame. Otherwise I would have slept through that one too.

It woke us up near the Meyerland area. I walked the house, everything in its place, figured it was a critter or something falling off the roof. Saw the story when I woke up later, and the time given was the exact time on my clock when it woke me up.

Here's a little bit about HVOF. I'd never heard of it, and still don't really understand it. For example, why would you use propylene instead of something saturated and cheaper? Either way, it would make a heck of a blast.

Did you mean REM sleep, or were you actually sleeping on the toilet for 2 hours?

I was in fifth grade and lived in College Station when that happened. House shook like an earth quake. It was weird for sure. Especially when you couldn't immediatyfind our what happened.

If we can get them to condemn about eight square blocks, maybe that promised gentrification of Spring Branch will finally happen.

Polypropylene is a cheaper alternative to Acetylene. There are differing opinions on this, and under the circumstances may not be in the best taste to debate it today, but many folks believe Acetylene is, in general, safer.

At shops like this, the gas is used as a flammable carrier medium to apply various (mainly powder) forms of high alloy metal to steel. The main tank was probably piped into working areas to be used in it's various applications.

HVOF is one method used to coat steel products, but Watson had several other coating methods that required significantly more polypropylene.

The houses right around there... yeah, that could help.

I live about 5 miles to the NW of that and slept right through it.

i'll admit i'm not expert, but my understanding is that propylene is a good blend of desirable characteristics for this type of application. it burns hotter than propane (800-1000 degF hotter) and the secondary flame is hotter than acetylene. but it is much safer and more stable than acetylene with a higher vapor pressure than propane so you can use it without vaporization equipment or worrying about the gas re-liquefying if it gets really cold. Also, it has a lower hydrogen content in the flame than basically any other petroleum fuel gas which is good because the hydrogen can embed itself in the steel making it brittle. propylene has basically replaced MAPP gas.

Meh, that part isn't really spring branch. Zoned to CFISD.

I wouldn't complain if it got dozed though

Thanks. I always understand stuff better when I know what the molecules are doing. FYI, you meant propylene, not polypropylene.

All fuels do not achieve the same result, so using something cheaper or more saturated won't get you the same finished product. I believe the fuel used can change the bond strength and overall hardness the carbide powder spray when coated onto a metal ball. Companies that do this have their own formulas for coating carbide onto parts.

Watson Grinding isn't some small mom and pop shop. They are pretty well known in the Houston valve industry and coating industry.
