More Baytown East fun for everyone

Quote:

The last time I-10 was hit by a barge it was shut down for three months. This time the damage appears to be worse.

Quote:

Not only is there significant damage to the bridge, officials fear the barges in the water underneath may have combustible materials in them. The bridges will remain shut down indefinitely.

Lets not forget that underneath this turbid water is a Superfund Site. San Jacinto River waste pits full of PCB and dioxins.

East bound side looks salvageable.

West Bound side looks like the entire support and short and long span on each side is going to have to completely come out and get replaced. I'm thinking 3 months MINIMUM, but more like 6 months and only if they can get emergency approval to skip environment permitting. With full environmental permitting, 2021 would be optimistic.

I hope that the companies that allowed this to happen (again) are held accountable.

Unless the construction company employs a race of aliens that craps plutonium straight into the river, I don't really think you're going to move the needle on the environmental quality of that stretch of river. They already have "don't eat any fish that you catch here" signs up all over the place around there.

Beltway south today was over an hour just from Wallisville to 225. Looks like I will work my way to the Washburn and hope it's better. I hope Canal Barge gets a hefty bill for this cluster

The story isn't that [DeSantis] "couldn't win" the primary. The story is that an overwhelming majority of our population is heinously stupid. 50% of them vote for communists. 75% of the remaining 50% vote for Trump, who cant win. When the majority of the opposition party insists on voting for an opposition candidate who can't win, you get exactly the government you deserve. - Well Endowed Ag

Buc-ee's in Baytown has about 20 cars in the parking lot. Guessing mostly employees. They have to be taking a huge hit.

The bridge needs to be redesigned to a suspension or similar with a longer span to eliminate the bents in the river itself and to provide more clearance while you are at it. They just got done fixing it from the last barge collision, after they fix this one - same sht will happen in the next flood.

Protection structure for the support columns. Looks like it got smoked pretty good given the damage to it.

Doesn't matter whether you're improving things or making them worse. REVIEW TIME on the permit is averaging 1.5 years right now in Harris County.

Those are supposed to protect the bridge from runaway boats and barges. Obviously don't work very well when multiple huge barges gets caught in a huge current at high water elevations.

Why don't they just put down one of those bridges that we used in ww2 to span rivers?

On a serious note, I drove back from fourchon last night and purposely timed it to hit that stretch around 2 am, no problem on the detour route then so maybe adjust your work schedules.

After Harvey, it only seem to take about 2 months to get construction going on replacing I-69 (US-59) Eastex. They moved lanes to the other bridge, ripped out a section and redid that in about 3 months. Sucked for a bit, but was do-able.

Could they not do the same here, albeit longer section? And maybe make an arc of the bridge with a longer span to avoid this in the future?

If the gov't gets out of the way and everyone is willing spend big $$, many things can happen in a short time.

The question is, will everyone do those things?

I would think that for Eastex after Harvey, the "gov't got out of the way and people spent $$" to get it done.
