My daughter's school just cancelled all evening activities, including a big production she was going to be in.

There's not a drop of rain in the area.

Overreaction.
The admins at my wife's job lobbied the CEO to let everyone "work from home" starting at 1 today. Guess they were worried they wouldn't be able to get home if they left at 3:30

Just because it isn't there now doesn't mean it won't be there by the time the events roll around.

This one is stupid. The school cancelling events is understandable though.

I'm aware of that, but it seems everyone is convinced all of Houston is going to be under water just because Kingwood and Fort Bend got it bad earlier this week.

It's an overreaction.

My kid's after-school was cancelled, so I and probably an extra hundred other parents get to leave work in order to pick up at 3. Looking forward to that impending traffic cluster****.

FitBit jiggling Carol's, Brenda's and Theresa's unite!

Has anyone noticed that a lot of these adminatee types drive cars that you wouldn't think they could fit into? Late model Camaros, Mustangs etc? Mostly the former fast livin oil gal types that wanted to still keep their edge.

This is eerily reminding me of Harvey. Forecast says today should be dry, heavy stuff later today and tonight. Well, day goes on, dry as expected, yet everyone proceeds to say the forecast was crap and an overreaction.....we then proceeded to get pounded.

To be fair, the rain has pushed out a little later, but the forecast wasn't for flooding rain all day, but later in the day.

3:15 update from SpaceCityWeather

Quote:

Key points

  • Scattered strong to severe storms this afternoon with large hail a possibility.
  • Weather deteriorates rapidly after 7 PM this evening, and if you can stay home for the balance of the night, it is advisable.
  • 1-4 of rain on average tonight with some pockets seeing 4-8 or more.
  • Rain may end after 2 AM or so, leading to a dry start to Friday.
  • More rain to come tomorrow night and Saturday.

Tonight/flooding concerns

I have looked at a lot of data today, and it seems to me that consensus favors a steady, significant escalation of rain after about 7 PM tonight. If you don't need to be out on the roads after 7 PM, we would strongly advise you stay put. If you do have to be out, pleasemake sure you have a safe route to get where you need to go, or stay put until conditions improve. Flash flooding is most dangerous and hardest to see at night. Storms will become more numerous and likely to setup over the heart of the Houston metro area, focusing along or north of I-10 initially, and then drifting slowly south as the night progresses.

I'm typically one of the first to call school administrators poons, but given what happened and the hell people already went through with trying to get home on Tuesday, I would agree with them on this one to err on the side of caution.

Yeah very similar to that first night of Harvey when everyone was out for the fight and then **** went crazy. Doesn't mean it will happen this time, but not a stupid idea to limit the number of people out and about after dark today. Especially after that spacecity update

Thunderstorm fuel, for sure...

SCW is pretty levelheaded about stuff, so for them to say, in essence, "stay dafuq home", that's an attention-getter.

Sitting at New Orleans airport due to cancellations. All SW flights to Houston after 4pm were cancelled. The last UA flight already delayed 30 minutes. If I make it back tonight I'm looking forward to the Uber driver flooding his car trying to get me home.
