Lol I swear the last time I flew to aruba on United. Many years ago. That the WiFi and directv didn't work over water.

It's all satellite based so it should, I could see direct TV having restrictions based on being outside the US but internet should work

I think direct TV cuts out once in international waters. Internet should be fine.

Streaming is pretty choppy so it's hard to get in a good session, anyway.

US airlines are crappy about that.

It cuts out on United.

But on foreign carriers I usually have fast enough in flight WiFi to stream Netflix or watch stuff via SlingTV

Last week I paid $18 on a United flight for WiFi. It worked for 10 minutes then shut off. 30 minutes later it came back on, but wouldn't log me back on and wanted me to pay again. I hate United.

I can barley get scores to load on Emirates WiFi unless it's improved much less stream video.

If you are just wanting to watch something, the free streaming you get on their app comes off an on board hard drive I think. So it should work anywhere.

I recently discovered a bug in United WiFi.

Both WhatsApp and Google Inbox (perhaps other services as well) are able to communicate over the WiFi without paying for access. I suspect this is through some kind of DNS port tunneling.

Anyway, I was sending work emails and personal messages the whole flight for free. Apps like Slack or Netflix were blocked as expected.

Yep, United's WiFi works about 20% of the time. They claim it will only work over the continental US at cruising altitude, while it actually works while taxiing on the ground in Vancouver, but not over Kansas or the Gulf. I'm pretty sure it works whenever the FA remembers to hit the button when that coincides with the onboard computer that runs the thing being operational.

It is exactly what you should expect from United Airlines.

Actually not necessarily. Depending on the provider, most still require line of sight to ground antennas. Some planes that are meant solely for flying across the ocean will have satellite only connections but I would assume since most of Southwest flights are domestic and over land, theirs still require ground coverage.

Southwest antenna is on the top of the plane, i assume this means satellite?

If it is on the top of the plane, then yes. I haven't flown southwest since they got wifi and I couldn't find anything specific to them.

Sadly, I've had pretty inconsistent results with Southwest's WiFi as well. Plus, I frequently travel on a Business Select ticket. While I can expense WiFi, it seems like a bit of a ripoff to charge a lot more for the Business Select ticket but not throw the WiFi in as one of the perks. Hell, half the time, I don't get to use the "free" drink coupon anyway.

I fly back and forth to Orlando and Fort Lauderdale monthly, never had an issue over the Gulf with the WiFi.

The WiFi for the flight tracker seemed to be working on the way home from BZE last night. I didn't pay for the access though.

4. Southwest

Surprise! The fun-loving airline that once felt like riding a public bus through the sky has a pretty damn great wifi setup. Southwest's proprietary system is notable because it works from gate-to-gate (for the most part). Southwest only flies Boeing 737 aircraft, and about a third of the fleet is equipped with Ku-band wifi provided by a company called Row44. For $8 a day, the wifi service is pretty fast, and since it's satellite-based, the internet won't cut out when you fly over bodies of water. You also get a bunch of free TV content when you connect. However, you could easily end up on a plane that's not equipped with wifi, and not all of the wifi-equipped have power sources. Check your flight with Southwest's wifi Finder.

Well, the article is 3 years old, but my main reason for posting the link was to maybe address the OP's question....namely this part:

I guess they could have changed from satellite-based in those 3 years so the above is no longer true....I don't know.

On the way to FLL now and no issues. Never had issues on this route or others over the gulf with Southwest. I will say from time to time it may be really slow or hit and miss to connect, but it's fairly rare and the WiFi is great 90% of the time.
