Maybe Phideaux could get JCI to pick up the tab.

Jim Crane trying to save the day! Cut the HGA out altogether

Problem is I believe they already lost that perfect spring date before the Masters and will be stuck with a HOT summer weekend.

Just keep it the ***** out of Memorial Park.
No, not Hermann, either.

This.

Look north to the complete S-Show that was the Byron Nelson this year at Trinity Forest and you can see the future of the Houston Open (and the Nelson even had AT&T as a major title sponsor). With Redstone/GCH backing out and the tour committing prime-time dates to tournaments that actually have sponsors, it's going to end up on a hot-as-balls weekend in a hole on the Tour schedule that won't attract any of the big names. It will be at a course that isn't suited for large crowds and will require a substantial amount of busing to and from the course.

I'm afraid a big time Tour event in Houston may be a lost cause unless a benefactor with a lot of money comes to save the day.

Except the date is gone. I live in Fall Creek (GCOH) and loved that we had it, but a big difference between late March and late July (or whenever it would be moved to).

Nope.

Quote:

Crane is proposing a mid-October date in the fall of 2019 with the tournament continuing to be played on the Golf Club of Houston course at least through 2020, pending a move to Houston's public Memorial Park course following a massive re-do.

"Once (the PGA) says go, we start pulling money together to renovate the course," he said. "I think we could raise the money in a year. You could play there in 2021, if you're lucky. That would be fabulous. We could get something going like (the) Phoenix (Open, sponsored by Waste Management) where you have a big turnout and raise a ton of money. You'd be able to draw crowds there."

I still think Memorial is a dumb idea, but there's a huge difference between trying to host in 2019 there and giving themselves 2-3 years for a MAJOR renovation and trying to host in 2021 or later.

Completely agree about waiting a few years. Especially with Memorial Park already under construction for massive general improvements right now to begin with (but stuff that also might make it a place more attractive for major outdoor events generally once completed).

Yes. The poster said we are toast unless a benefactor with a lot of money comes and saves the day. Which he mostly is... at least he's delaying it and keeping it afloat until a better plan becomes viable

Right.

Also - he's going to need some of the Tournament Operations Staff from the HGA to keep things running, so while some here (and on the Golf Board) have expressed a dislike of Timms and the HGA, Crane is going to need them to keep the event working.

Crane needs the HGA like HISD needs its current corrupt administrators
Im looking for Ray Finkle.... and a clean pair of shorts. Im just a very big Finkle fan. This is my Graceland, sir.

HGA laid off close to 10 yesterday, most people that were associated with the tournament. Looks like they don't plan on hosting a tournament next year.

Maybe Crane's bringing in his own team to run it and those people aren't needed anymore.
Ag_07

Or HGA got the message that Crane sent out the other day and laid them off.

I'm sure Crane will scoop them up and they'll be a part of his team.

Now he really doesn't need the HGA.

Kinder gave $80M to memorial park conservancy which triggered another $70M in donations totaling $150M. It would take $10-$15M to renovate the golf course not including club house. Money is there. If I were a betting man I'd say Houston open to be played at Mem park at the latest 2024.

Why didn't Kinder donate money to getting rid of the obamavilles underneath the overpasses that HPD can't get rid of? 10 mil to send to Dallas and San Antonio would be money much more well spent.

If they can pull this off, wow. Here is a mock up of the course going over Memorial Drive.

EDIT: I was wrong,, this is not a course! Those tiny stick people bunched up in groups threw me off

If that's the golf course going over Memorial Dr then this is certainly gonna be a shlt show.

It may not be the course, but connecting the two sides of the park would be nice. Selfishly, a revamping of the course would be great all year round.

It's not golf course, but they do plan to build a pair of wide earthen bridges over Memorial Dr between W Memorial Loop and where N Picnic Lane intersection currently is.

Shown at #1 in the middle on the image I posted earlier in the thread.

Wow, with swings I've seen on public municipal courses, I'd be weary to drive down that stretch of Memorial with golfers on the course.

Thanks for the clarification. I too live within walking distance of MP. I used to live close to the TPC in TW. I went there for the party tents and corporate house parties. If you recall, parking in the TW was not sufficient either. Buses from park & rides were the norm for many. For the Art Festival in the park, they have a bus system from Northwest mall.

For those who haven't gone by the park lately, they are already underway with this project on the east side toward Crestwood. It's going to add value to this area.

Gotta be better than the Byron Nelson being moved to a former landfill with no shade on the South Side of Dallas. Man, that was a sh-t show this year. They were trying to do something different and completely screwed up everything about the Nelson.

That and playing #10 at Bryan Muni were certainly dangerous games. I sent more than a few into traffic on Villa Maria
