Anyone been here? Good/Bad?

I haven't been able to find anyone who has been to this place. Only an hour north of Houston.

It used to be Chain-O-Lakes, and I spent a lot of time camping up there when I was growing up. Now, it's more of a private community with some of the old COL cabins available for rent by the day. I was up there about 10 years ago for company thing and still enjoyed my time there. It's pretty secluded and quiet, which was enjoyable. If you've never been there and want to get away with the wife and/or family for a quiet weekend, I'd suggest giving it a shot. Watch out for the wildlife though...

I actually have 6 links, and was getting super pissed the more info I looked up...So, look it up yourself, I am not going to fight about something I know to be true, to a person who would just as soon see me in prison or dead.

My wife and I spend a lot of time there. If you like nature, trails, fishing and phenomenal food, it's a great place for a weekend getaway or a week during the summer. The Retreat has ~30 log cabins for rent, and the adjacent community also has ~10 larger cabins/homes for rent if you have a larger group. The seafood buffet on Friday nights is phenomenal.

I can see taking my kid there in a few years for a quick fishing trip with cabins close by. Looks cool. Thanks.

So did the ownership give up the selling of cabins as weekend/retirement homes and decide to go full-on "Great Outdoors" for vacations or what?

Finn-

The Retreat rents logs cabins. The adjacent Artesian Lakes Community Association has a total of 103 lots, ~80 of these lots have been sold so far, ~40 homes are built, including ~6 full time residents with the other homes mostly weekend homes. Around 8 homes are in the rental pool.

Chain O Lakes was fun back in the day. Is the big slide still there where you sit on the skid board thing? Schlitterbahn had one just like it but it didn't shoot you out onto a lake.

We used to see several gators when we were there.

2 big slides are still there that dump you into the swim lake. There's a really nice pool next to the swim lake. You will see a few gators, but they rarely hang around the swim lake.

Cold night + company paying for drinks + a bunch of 23-27 year olds with a girl:guy ration of about 2:1 (if you take out the lesbian) + hot tub = great time.

04 -- sounds like you need to get your company out to the Retreat again soon. Dr. Jimmy Smith is still leading teambuilding activities for a lot of companies and remains one of the best I've ever seen.

Thanks for all the replies. I am taking my son Wed-Fri to go fishing, horseback riding, hiking. Not sure if the water will be warm enough for swimming. The cabins look pretty decent. I was reading some complaints about them being dirty.

Thankfully, I don't work for that company any longer.

We take our boys there every summer for a weekend. The cabins aren't fancy by any means, but it is much better than tent camping in the summer. There is not a lot to do, so I would never stay more than two maybe three nights. We mainly just fish, swim, and put around on the golf cart. The boys love it. They can perch jerk off of the front porch all day long. If they are slow on the reel, there is a good chance that one of the resident gators will have an easy meal. It happened to my oldest when he was 3 and he was livid. They also pick you up in a horse and carriage for a Saturday morning breakfast buffet. The food is decent and the kids love the carriage ride.

Yeah, it's secluded, but not that secluded.

Jerking perch I would assume.

Maybe he was thinking about the other kind of jerking when he typed it?

For all of you pervs, let me rephrase: They can sit on the porch of the cabin and catch perch all day long.

Ditto.

Still go up there from time to time. Nice and quiet, usually.

I've thought about taking my boys up there to do some fishing- anybody know what the canoe/kayak rentals run? I sold my kayak fleet when I bought a skiff. Been hunting for another canoe though, just can't find the right one.

I think the fishing up there is catch & release for visitors/renters.

Right, I was thinking of renting a cabin for a weekend and fishing.

No, no, not porch jerking, perch jerking.
The former is an option after dark after debating the ol lady.
The latter is a fish.

Those do sound like similar options.

Great time! Cabin was clean (we stayed in the Jim Bowie cabin), we caught fish, horseback riding ($45/person for about a 45 minute ride), swam in the cold azz lake, canoeing ($25 for 8 hour rental...there was an all day rental, but I don't remember what the cost was...8 hours was enough for me...no one hour rate..8 was the least), hay ride and smores...and plenty of alligators.

Didn't attempt any porch perch jerking!

My son had a blast and we will go back.

I'm not sure if they are still there, but 3 canoes may or may not have sank in various lakes in the spring of 2000 from some kids who went there after prom rather than to Galveston.

Nope. One of my friends, who was one of the most popular guys in the school (so why we were friends is beyond me), his parents said they'd pay for the place if we agreed to let his mom go to be the chaperone. Considering we were all broke as eff, we agreed to it. She gave us a budget and we found a place in Galveston, but I found COL was cheaper and told him to ask his mom if we could use the difference in the budget vs. what we found to buy beer. She agreed, thus we booked 2 cabins at COL. What was supposed to be about 10 of us initially ballooned into about 20 once a couple cars of girls showed up looking to have some fun. Who were we (the ones whose prom date's parents wouldn't let them go) to tell them to leave?

I will also point out that this guy's graduation party at his house was damn near Steve Stifler like, minus Stifler's mom.

Channel 11 did a cool feature on Artesian (Chain o) Lakes last week:

Dr Jimmy Smith is interviewed, for the few of y'all who know him.
