Houston I hardly knew ye.
Thank you tine board for your wealth of knowledge. I have tasted the best burgers, BBQ, and found a dry cleaner all because of you. But I'm off to greener pastures and out of this **** hole.
Jealous. Where you headed? I want to move to Colorado Springs, Asheville NC, Irvine or BCS. Houston is just unrecognizable from what it was when I grew up here. Too many illegals clogging up the roads (and everything else) and driving like idiots. Too many Sheila Jackson Lee supporters in the Heights area. Too much crime. I'd love to live somewhere where people wouldn't blame you if you left something showing in your car and it got broken into. I'd miss the food, but food is way down my list of priorities and I can always cook a better steak or burger or fajitas than most steak or burger or fajitas places.
Really weird that I have lived for long periods in all of the places you named.
I live in Springs, spent a few years in Asheville, my sister was born in Irvine, and I went to college in BCS. Lived in Houston for almost 20 years and DFW for 12. I can definitely make the comps here.
Springs is great. Not as conservative as everyone would have you believe. The north half is like a more conservative Austin and the western half is foothills surrounded by big backcountry. I choose proximity to the backcountry. Today I will go mountain biking in the mountains and climb for 2+ hours followed by a 30-35 minute brake melting downhill. The trailhead is a mile from my house. Few cities in America where you can get that. Tomorrow we are headed to the Dinosaur center for the 5 year old and Monday we are taking a day off to meet friends in Breckenridge (2 hour drive). Denver is an hour away. Next weekend friends are visiting from Tennessee and the one after that we are going to the Pro Cycling tour/Wilco concert. Seems like every weekend there is something epic going on.
Asheville is not as liberal as most say either. Most of the city is old people who retired to florida and came half way back when they learned Florida sucks. The hippies are loud, but there just aren't that many of them. Stay away from the Peel and you won't hardly ever deal with them.
I have no idea why anyone would want to live in Irvine. Nor do I have any idea why anyone would want to live in BCS. BCS is a great place to raise a family if you want to teach them how to play video games and sweat. Sorry but there is more to life than the number of Targets per capita.
Houston is a wonderful place to visit but a horrible place to live. You go from one air conditioner to another while slapping mosquitos. Get out while you can, life doesn't have to be like that.
