http://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/article/New-policy-to-decriminalize-marijuana-in-Harris-10935947.php?t=19c3cf2a54438d9cbb&cmpid=twitter-premium

Quote:

The new policy, set to begin March 1, means that misdemeanor offenders with less than four ounces of marijuana will not be arrested, ticketed or required to appear in court if they agree to take a four-hour drug education class, officials said.

Since there is no arrest, there is no arrest record. Since there is no court date, there are no court documents connected to the encounter. The plan calls for officers to seize the marijuana and drop it off at a police station at the end of their shift, along with a record of the encounter in case the suspect does not take the class.

I dont know about yall, but I dont really see much of a difference in this and it being legal. Unless you are talking about large quantities.

But 4 ounces is a **** load of pot on its own.

Of which I'm sure will be paid to the city.

Just a different way to create revenue, however, I can get on board with not arresting people who otherwise don't commit crimes.

Pay a fine, move on.

You still can't grow your own or purchase from a dispensary like Colorado or Washington. Meaning, you still have to go through a drug dealer. Far from legal in my opinion but definitely a step in the right direction. Texas is missing out on 200 million in tax revenue per year that could be going toward infrastructure, schools, and programs to help out the less fortunate.

I would love to be able to stop by the dispensary on a Friday night and buy a J.

So basically, dealers now know exactly how much to carry at any one time?

From those three sentences, it doesn't look like there is any sort of enforcement stick for not attending their little class. Seems like the cops would be overstepping their mandate by acting as cops, judge, jury and tax collectors.

I've never ever touched the weed, but this seems like a good thing. Too much real crime going on to clog up the system with petty pot smokers.

If the tax revenues were actually what they are predicted to be, and if the actual collected revenues actually went towards "the children!", there might be a point.

But neither one of them ever happens. I bet CO and the other states aren't reporting the additional expenditures they have as a result of legalized weed either. Nor does anybody really know what the long term costs will be.

I'm not against legalizing weed, just pointing out that legalization is not some magic cure all that suddenly makes the world full of rainbows and unicorns like the super proponents want you to believe.

I have some friends who are "super proponents" and there's just no discussion with them. Marijuana legalization will cure everything, from cancer to the national debt.

Legalize it. Tax it. Regulate use in the work place (zero tolerance). Tax it some more. Reduce my property taxes.

I can dream. But I bet you if that is what was part of the deal to legalize it. It'd pass in a heartbeat.

But it would help cover the shortfall when oil is low. That's the issue, IMO.

We are facing another budget shortfall, so schools will get screwed.

If MJ was legalized and taxed, we wouldn't have this issue.

I'm not saying it's a cure all, but what an adult puts into his or her body (as long as they aren't hurting others) is their business, and not the government's.

If I ran a company like trucking or manufacturing, I'd remove the badge-in stations and replace them with pee-in stations.

Shouldn't you leave that to the employer? Plenty of creative type places would encourage it. Also, just like alcohol there are levels of intoxication, if I want to go knock back two beers at lunch that is not problem, if I want to get a little light high that should be a problem either.
