I got a quote for my home in the Spring area which I think is absurd; just want to confirm. I think this guy mostly deals with the idiots in the heights who think it's a badge of honor to overspend on their houses and construction projects.

We got a quote to replace just the door frame exterior and repaint. It wasn't pretty.

He may not be trying to gouge you, but this is Houston.

I had my back doors replaced by Lowes, 3 steel half lite doors with built in blinds---$1898 w/ install & military discount.

I've looked at the front doors with sidelights and that is looking to be anywhere from 1800-3500 depending on material/brand.

When did doors get so damn expensive?

Even industrial doors that we're buying for buildings on my project seem ridiculously over-priced. I mean, we're talking over $100k for six doors, and they aren't even blast rated.

We pay about $2000 for standard 3x7 hollow metal doors w/hardware in our warehouses, installed (in concrete panels).
Around $1000 installed for a typical interior office door, timely frame.

There are fire ratings, STC ratings, and R-values to consider.

We looked at mahogany front doors with side lights and the prehung doors ran anywhere from 1200 to over 2,000.

We did a kraft style mahogany pre hung door without sidelights and that door, unstained, ran $800 I think. It's about another $100 per door for mahogany brick mold.

According to a contractor I work with some in College Station, the problem is there are only a few places that actually make doors. I forget if it was state or federal, but he said now door manufacturers have to be licensed or certified or something like that. He used to cut his own doors, but now he has to order them from Houston.

Maybe I'm wrong, and someone with more knowledge can correct me; but the gist of it is governmental regulations.

Residential:

• He wants $16K for the front w/ new frame, side lights, and transom
• He was $2k per back door
• $20K total...

Not happening.

I bought a new back door from Bison on the beltway for $250 (it was a return w/ a window & built in blinds) and paid my BIL to (****tily) install it for $150. Already installed in the frame and reused existing trim.

It really sucks how the contractors try to gouge us ITL folks and causes me to get my BIL to do it when I know it won't be the quality I want; I guess they'd rather make a shltload off of one job from the idiot that doesn't know better than do 5 regularly priced jobs. Some lawn guy quoted my next door neighbor lady $800 to rake the leaves in her yard.

Yeah that seems way excessive to me as well. How much is he charging for labor?

I'm a contractor. That price is ridiculous. You have already received good advice to call Hoelscher. Another good company is Seybro Door and Weatherstrip. They are out of the Weimar area but they service the greater Houston area. Both are good companies.

OP, I'm not sure how handy you are, but I replaced my own front door using YouTube and a purchase from these guys off I-45. All it cost was $500 for the door and a few hours. .

I had Hoelscher weatherstrip custom make a door for my at my old 60s ranch. I gave them a plan with design and dimensions that i wanted and they made it out of the most beautiful African mahogany...that door was awesome. Total price for this complete custom job was around 3k. I think you are getting screwed, as mentioned above give Hoelscher a call.

We used them for a new backdoor with doggy door built in. I believe it was pretty much the same price for our door, had a buddy install it for a handle of Crown and dinner for him and his wife
