I like the Hunger Games reality show motif. Put Snake Plisken, the Godfather, Rahm Emmanuel, Ty Cobb, and some guys from 9th Ward in there, and see who makes it out.

Keep just the skeletal structure and build a parking garage in it with one huge circular ramp.

It would be cheaper to demo and the build new than try to bring that POS up to code.
I agree with you, but it sounds like all the plans to this point include renovations that would require leaving it as is.

Follow the money. People stand to get paid by turning the Dome into some gimmicky attraction.

Ed Emmett did not get be Harris County judge by being a dumb ass. That is why his Dome proposals and bumbling doublespeak sound so idiotic. He is insulting the people of Harris County by selling a pig in a poke.

I'm not sure if he stands to be the sole beneficiary of kickbacks or if he and lots of others stand to get paid when/if the Dome is repurposed.

Money is the only reason he is feeding bullsh t to the people of Harris County when we clearly rejected pouring more funds into the Dome in 2013.

I'd love to see one of the investigative reporters around town like Ted Oberg get to the bottom of Dome stuff. Maybe someone is already working on it.

Yep.

what i think would be cool is strip it down to the skeletal structure and just make it into a greenspace park thing. that would be kinda cool. not sure how feasible though.

That's my thought. Keeping the skeletal structure would be unique.

I just hope they can find a way to keep all the asbestos.

Maybe make it the nation's first asbestos museum.

How much revenue is going to be generated from this "greenspace park thing"? The NRG park complex needs more space and the Astrodome occupies quite a bit of it. Imagine how much easier it would be to attend the Texans games and HLSR if there was a large parking structure. The only people that really care about the Astrodome nowadays are the ones in line to make a profit.

Leave it and let it become one with the land over time. The Dome is what put Houston on the map. It made us who we are today. We are a much greater city for it. The fact that so many want it torn down is simply a sign of liberalism run amonk and the instant-gratification entitlement society we now live in.

Anyone else tired of hearing about Ed Emmett jet-setting to Germany to check out the old zeppelin hanger-turned-water park?

Emmett is a *********moron if he thinks turning the dome into anything other than a pile of rubble is what County residents want.

KTRK absolutely beat that story to death. I guess we know Channel 13 wants to see idiots frolicking all over the Dome.

To sum up the last few years of the Dome:
1. Voters turn down funding to Dome
2. Ed tries to make Dome a historical monument on the sly to keep Dome from being torn down
3. Numerous renderings have circulated which all equal epic fail
4. No private funding opportunities have come forward because everyone knows the Dome is terrible
5. County arranges feel-good birthday for Dome for nostalgic purposes
6. Ed and cronies scope out water park in former blimp hanger

I honestly can't see a water park working. The Texans and HLSR should block any attempt.

Jesus Christ, Ed Emmett is once again telling the people of Harris County to f ck off because he will do what he wants to do.

The money to fund that concrete POS has to come from somewhere. A "conservancy" is just a code word for a new organization to funnel money through. The Dome plan is basically part museum (to celebrate the Dome), part indoor park and part parking garage.

I'm curious if big business will pony up cash for this crap idea. I guess the Chevrons and Exxons of the world may need another way to write off money, but this seems like a bad time to be asking for philanthropic donations in a city that is mostly O&G-driven.

The citizens of Harris County will be left with the bill for this $242 million "park" in the end in one way or another.
quote:
Model for conservancy

Emmett said the model for the quasi-governmental conservancy is similar to that of the Houston Zoo and Discovery Green, two of the city's most popular destinations.

"Rather than having all these independent operations around the community, the city and county, maybe it's time to figure out a way that they benefit each other," he said. "And the Dome's a key part of that."

Emmett expects the money for the Dome will come from numerous sources, the county and perhaps the city as well.

Time to vote Judge Ed out of office. He clearly is power hungry and does not care for democracy.
