It was x5.6 for the Texas Bowl, so I'm going to say it will hit at least x8.

Although last weekend I took an Uber to the golden nugget at 2am and it was actually pretty reasonable.

It was x10 on Halloween so I'm guessing the exact same.

I'm actually wanting to take an uber home from an NYE house party that is pob 6-8mi from my house, and I'm worried what it might be

It's cheaper than a DUI

For a couple hundred bucks, I'll give you a ride anywhere you want within 50 miles.

still cheaper than a DUI, or valet, or a parking ticket for being on the wrong street. Thankfully I'm only going 2 miles tonight!

Just got an email from Uber:

On New Year's Eve, everyone is looking for rides at exactly the same times, and Houston has an incredibly busy night ahead. We expect the highest demand and highest fares between 12:30 and 2:30 AM, where an average ride at 2 AM could be over $100. To avoid these high fares, don't request during these two hours - catch a ride right when the ball drops at midnight or wait a couple hours for prices to return to normal.

hard to accuse them of shady business practices when they're so transparent and up front about it...

Or hire a private car service and have them at your disposal for 4-6hrs for the same amount or a bit more than uber...

Probably too late to do that.

I've never seen/experienced uber surge pricing. Does the app tell you before the driver is on the way?

Yes, while your booking it tells you.

I've also gotten popup notices following an uber ride when surge pricing has started.

There were no regular cars available for us, so we used Uber Black, their luxury cars. Quote was $32-41, at 2am. Trip was 6.8mi , $33. However I saw a promo code posted online earlier in the day, I entered it & it knocked $20 off. So 3 of us got driven home for $13....not a bad deal.

There were hardly any surges last night at all. They had tons and tons of drivers out there.

Yea our driver said he was surprisingly not busy

Lots of people worked around 10-12 hrs and only took home 150 bucks (not including all the gas).

Unbelievable. It's almost like, when you allow for high prices (surge pricing or even "price gouging") at times of high demand, the supply increases because of it and more people get what they need.

I think there is a lesson in economics in there somewhere...
