I once bumped into him at the old Rice Ep on San Felipe and Post Oak. He was buying a sheetload of pomegranates, for what I assumed was for drinks for the orgy he was hosting back as his crib. I gave him an approving nod and otherwise left him alone, like you would a pitcher in the last inning of a no-hitter.

Well done sir, well done.

sh*t, i thought this was gonna say he died.

he's been looking like the scotch buzz has faded by air-time for a while now.

now he can focus more on berating Art Rascon from behind the scenes while he looks at t himself in the camera and stammers his way thru Live at 5.

this old set with Bob Allen, Dave Ward & Ed Brandon literally looks like Anchorman news-set

Bobs got hairspray, Dave's got a handle of whiskey & Ed's got a sack of blow and an underage boy underneath the desk.

I would see him at Kays liquor lounge at 10:35 half way through a beer. That meanass hairless waitress behind the bar did take care of him.

I remember hanging out with him there in the early to mid 1990s. Classic. Used to see Rudy T out and about too...he (Rudy T)smoked Kool cigs...good ole days.

I remember being at Kay's one night in the late '80's when all of a sudden one of the patrons slipped off his bar stool and ended up flat on his back on the lounge room floor.

That patron's name was Dave Ward.

It was said his brother owned Kay's but that seemed like the old "I need a beer to go to sleep," "I need a drink to relax," "A beer helps coach this t-ball team better" type of excuse...

Friend of a friend is an assistant for him on Channel 13. She said (at a party to me) he still doesn't understand twitter (calls it twatter) and yells at people for not getting things right. He still wants to be correct in what he reports and doesn't like screw-ups. Doesn't know her name, but has like 4 assts.

I asked if I could come over one day and sit down with him to get stories about the 80's and 90's. Said it probably couldn't happen.

I do need a beer to do all of those things.

Dave goes back at least to the mid-80's at Kay's. I used to hang out there back then and he was a regular every night on the bar stool after the 10:00 news.

Kinda want to hit Kay's now. I bet he will be there after his last show..

every time we saw him at Kay's we would ask him to say, "Thank you, Marvin."

He always obliged.

Evidently he will still be on the 6 pm broadcast for a while longer, just not doing the 10 edition any more.

apparently he stopped drinking years ago - that is why he is still alive. I saw him almost die at the Astrodome one night in a celebrity motocross race in the early 70's

At one-time we had him, Ron Stone and Steve Smith as the anchors of the three networks in Houston. All of them were outstanding.

Truly class act and amazing sense of humor. He'll do just about anything to help out charities or other good causes. Hell, he even did drag once for some fundraising event.

At least he didn't sign off like Mike Snyder up in DFW a while back.

Two important things to note:

1). That's his co anchor crying on the side
2). He's coming back tomorrow at 5 and 6 so he's not really going anywhere!

He is a great dude and a Houston legend. At Kay's I asked him "What happened to that blue norther that Ed said was supposed to be here by now?" He said, "I think it got caught in the barbed wire in Huntsville..." he then slammed a longneck in the trash and went to the restroom.....

End of an era for sure. He's pretty awesome.

Houston legend.

Not many people actually deserve the "OG" honorific in Houston. Dave Ward is one of the few.

For clarification: There are production assistants that assist the entire newsroom... sort scripts, run prompter, even write stories and edit video. There are usually four or so of these PAs on-staff at any given time. Dave does not have PERSONAL assistants... at least not in the newsroom.

man, talk about bringing up some quality childhood memories hearing that after Slime in the Ice Machine

Having grown up in Fort Worth and only living here for the past 16 years, after the death of local news, I always find it interesting reading these "nostalgia" threads from lifelong Houstonians. I'll always be a Rangers/Cowboys/Mavericks fan, but for some reason on texags, I'm always on this board, but never on the Metroplex one. I grew up with Chip Moody, Harold Taft...

I did go to HS with Jessica Willey (Arlington Lamar). Is she still around?

I always get the impression that he doesn't care for Gina Gaston and only tolerates her because he has too.

He used to hang out at the Aquarium Lounge on W Dallas too. I used to see him and Shara Fryer there. What a baller he is/was. That was a great bar.

Dave Ward is the man.

Ward is the man. He is genuinely a nice person.

I can echo what Coog 97 said. Ward does not have a personal assistant at the station.

Also, about the yelling at producers -- it happens. But, when he does it, he has a reason. He cares about what's being reported, how it's being reported. And, when he sees someone screwing up, he calls them on their stuff. The reason he does that is because he cares about the Tine and wants the stories done right.

It'll be a sad day when he retires. Dave says he hopes to be doing the 6pm at least through his 50th anniversary at 13.
