quote:
“Everybody knew certain guys (were gay). Everybody speculated and people used to see these two guys come in by themselves. They’d leave at lunchtime and then come back,” Cris Dishman said.

Dishman, a two-time Pro Bowler echoed Lathon’s thoughts, saying the gay players were highly valued on the field and showering with them in the locker room was “no big deal.”

i was however much more athletic back then and more conformable/confident in my body so that probably helped. not sure i have enough self-esteem to shower with the typical fit/athletic gay guy these days

It's sad looking at the roster from 20 years ago, and noticing more than half the team is younger than I am.

McClain gave a pretty convincing rebuttal to the Jeff Alm urban legend this afternoon on 610. Like everyone else in this town I've always heard this, but it's always been someone who knows someone who knew someone else.

listened to it, wasn't that convincing, and most of what he says is garbage so pretty hard to believe him.

McClain is a total homer and naive so he'd spin any story he was told that protected someone's legacy.

No idea if the story is true or not but I certainly wouldn't buy any story McClain is spinning.

Oilers endorsed, accepted their gay teammates

Coaches hated coaches. Players detested players. A team divided fell apart, caving to the pressure of one of the craziest and most soap opera-like seasons in NFL history.
That's the longstanding story line of the 1993 Oilers, an arc reinforced by a recent NFL Network documentary about one of the most dysfunctional pro football teams to take the field.
Players supported that general theme during interviews with the Chronicle. But they also insisted the 1993 Oilers were much more of an inclusive family than most have given them credit for.
"I really enjoyed playing on that team, to be honest with you," five-time Pro Bowl defensive end Ray Childress said.
To prove how united the Oilers were in the face of constant adversity, players confirmed a rumor hinted at during the peak of a turmoil-filled era.
At least two key members of the 1993 Oilers were gay, players said. And not only did the team know about the issue, but players accepted their gay teammates and did not ostracize them.
"Listen, those guys that we're talking about were unbelievable teammates," said Pro Bowl linebacker Lamar Lathon, who starred at the University of Houston. "And if you wanted to go to war with someone, you would get those guys first. Because I have never seen tougher guys than those guys.
"And everybody in the locker room, the consensus knew or had an idea that things were not exactly right. But guess what? When they strapped the pads on and got on the field, man, we were going to war with these guys because they were unbelievable."
Defensive back Bubba McDowell echoed his former teammate, saying the gay players were highly valued on the field and showering with them in the locker room was "no big deal."
"Everybody knew certain guys (were gay)," McDowell said. "Everybody speculated, and people used to see these two guys come in by themselves. They'd leave at lunchtime and then come back.
"Even on the road, guys get caught coming out of the room. 'Hey, what you doing?' But if it was such a bad situation, trust me, there was no grown man that'd put up with that if … that was a distraction to them.
"But that's just how it was. And those same gentlemen that were being accused of it, we were with them all of the time. The whole time."
In April, former NBA center Jason Collins, 35, became the first active athlete in any of the four major pro sports to declare he was gay. Collins is a free agent and hasn't played for a team since the 2013-14 season began.
No active NFL, MLB, NBA or NHL athlete publicly has declared being gay.

There is a trick if you try to open a pay chron article, copy the headline into google and you can read the whole thing.
