That's your first mistake. Cook off means a competition, which it is, but for most people that is secondary to the party.

Very noob to walk around with my badge on?

There is nothing wrong with wearing your badge, but I wouldn't just because that makes it easy to lose, and they are a pain in the a** to replace.

I went with a friend a few years ago, went to the ONE TENT we could get into, ate some average BBQ, drank some beer, walked around and people watched but really could not go into any other tent....

so someone let you into their tent even though they had no idea who you were and let you eat and drink free off them and all you could do was complain about the bbq being average.

I changed my mind...gtfo of Houston.

Can some one explain the whole cook off thing to me. Cook Off to me implies you get to sample food from multiple places.

WTF is the point and why is it called a cook off when you can only eat food at that ONE place (and maybe a few 'public' places)....I just don't get it at all.

The HLSR BBQ Cookoff is equivalent to Chilifest for adults. Did you know there is actually a chili competition at Chilifest? Or did you just figure it was a beer drinking country music party? The more you go, the longer you live in town, the more you progress your career, you will start to expand your tent access and meet more people with tents, and the more fun you will have. One of the tents we hang out in actually takes the competition seriously and they have won or placed in at least one category every year for 10 years or so, and their BBQ is outstanding. Most people blow off the competition and concentrate on the party though. The first year I lived here and went, I had a similar reaction as you and wondered what all the hoopla was about. Closing in on 10 years of cookoffs now and its my favorite time of year. Rodeo season in Houston is excellent!

I am no veteran, but I have graced a Cookoff or two with my presence in my day. Many more to go, and much more to learn.
