Got a buddy that went to HS with me in Dallas. He has lived in Ohio (don't ask) since. His daughter is coming to Houston and needs the best BBQ and Mexican resturants there. Being from Midland can give him no help but Papassitios. What other great places are there? Thanks!!!!

I went to the Ninfas on Navigation for the 1st time this past weekend and I'd throw it in the mix as well.

BBQ: Gatlins (hands down best)

Mexican: El tiempo or Escalantes (tiempo has a cheaper menu now too so that helps a lot)

Gatlins BBQ and Lulings are the Tine board favorite for BBQ

El Tiempo, Lupe Tortillas, and Ninfas on Navigation would be my 3 mexican restaurants

Take him to one of the million taco trucks or Torta trucks. They are money

Nobody in America says "Mexican food" and doesn't mean "tex-mex." Mexican food is complete ****. Tex-mex is badass.

You obviously havent gotten good authentic mexican food... And base your opinion of the food you have tried in Houston...

Mexican food when done correctly is awesome...

I'm not gonna say it's complete sh**, but I wouldn't be surprised if most people on the tine board have never had real mexican food. In general, Tex-Mex is so much better. This offends a lot of people though.

Wow we must really have horrible Tex-Mex/Mexican looking at this list. Lupe Tortilla, Los Tios among the best? Yikes.

y'all can hate me, but I hate Lupe Tortilla. I went twice, giving it a second chance, but it failed.

Lupe Tortilla blows ****. Oh... and sorry to burst everyone's bubble but Tony's is absolutely awful.

I have only had the "nachos los tios" at Los Tios, so I can't take a real position for or against the restaurant, but they may have been the best nachos I have ever had...holy sh** they were good.

Some of my favs are:

Ninfa's Navigation
Spanish Flowers
Tony's
Pappasito's (for beef fajitas...flame away)

I also throw Cyclone Anaya's on Durham in every now and then. It is probably the most hated restaurant on the Tine board for some reason but I have never had a dish I didn't like.

i find mexican food in houston trends fairly truly with the law of diminishing returns. as long as its not gross, its generally good - it takes a lot of effort to get excellent. from there, its ego/cost/gimick/location that differentiate the masses.

that said, i firmly believe once you find a tolerable cheap mexican joint (for us Chuy's), just quit and commit. you'll save yourself a lot of wheel spinning.

*by "mexican" i mean texmex.

My favorite is Rancho El Jalisco on North Houston Rosslyn. They have a pay phone on a pole in the lot advertising 25 cent calls to Mexico and generally someone in a Gran Torino is sitting there leaned out his window talking.

Agree, Tony's was awful. Strong drinks, crappy food

Fonda San Miguel is good Mexican (not Tex-Mex) food, but it is in Austin. I've never had good Mexican anywhere else, usually too bland. You'd probably have to go coastal in general.

City Market is the best BBQ I've had in Houston. I do miss DFW for that. Unfortunately their Tex-Mex is horrible.

Tex-Mex here has been decent though, just look for good tortillas and beans... go from there. I haven't been to Anaya's here, but the one in Dallas is crap.

I'll have to try this Los Tios and Spanish Flowers, they sound promising. Otherwise I'll just have to schedule a field visit to Laredo.

If by "awesome" you really mean completely devoid of flavor and generally ****ty, then sure, you are correct.

Am I the only one who's never been really impressed with Cyclone Anaya? I've only been to their Woodway location but it's never struck me as anything special.

easily my least favorite of the popular texmex places in town.

I think Anayas supports my theory: expensive, location, trendy, mediocre. If it were 30% less, it'd be fine.

I guess my experience is from either my grandmother, one of my aunts or my mother cooking.. I'll be honest and say that I have not eaten "mexican" food in a restaurant in the US.. Your experience may be different from mine therefore you have a different opinion..

---Romeritos (favorite), Huitlacoche tacos, flor de calabaza tacos or quesadialla w/ queso oaxaca (second favorite) <--- this my friend is Mexican food you must try at some point..

Only time I've ever had real Mexican Food was in Mexico. Can't say I was impressed. It was like I just ate Hot. No flavor to speak of, just burning.

Love that place. But with dinner for two and two drinks a piece, the bill always came out to about $80. I would hope Mexican food would be pretty solid for that price. Cool place, solid food, and great drinks. Doubt too many people in Mexico are eating like that though.

No it is not just you, it is easily the top 1-2 most hated restaurant on the tine board. I think I have only seen 1-2 people aside from me recommend it. Probably because it is in the same price range as El Tiempo and only slightly better while not looking as mexicanny inside. Disclaimer: I have only been to the Durham location...but the drinks, salsa, lobster enchiladas, suizas, and quesadillas have always been money.

Honestly though, if it were up to me, I would never set foot in El Tiempo or Cyclone Anaya's b/c i think tex-mex should be dirt cheap. Unfortunately though, the girl isn't always down to rub elbows with drunken day laborers at Los Dos Amigos on date night.

For me the only appeal of Cyclone Anayas is that the midtown location is walking distance for those hangover mornings requiring a greasy pick me up.
