Howdy all, I was wondering if any current law students or lawyers could help me make a decision between STCL and Tech for law school. Id rather practice in Houston but wouldn't be opposed to Dallas. TIA.

STCL, if you're staying in Houston.

Why not UH? I hear it is better that STCL since O'quinn poured a ton of cash into it.

^UH is in a different league than Stcl.

STCL if you want to practice in houston. UH does have a much better reputation and ranking...but is much harder to get into.

A lot of smart students @STCL.

Had an Anaesthesiologist next to me in Torts 2.

Lots of folks w/big time jobs like downtown for post-work classes...busy people!

I believe the former CEO of Reliant got his JD
there years ago...parttime.

I went to Tech, practice in Houston. Tech is a much better value than STCL in my opinion. Much cheaper, better facilities, and cost of living in Lubbock. The only downside, obviously, is that you aren't near any major metropolitan areas while you're at school. I had a great experience though.

My other advice: don't go to law school; it's not worth the cost.

This. If I had stayed at my old job I would've gotten two promotions and raises by now. The company even offered to pay for a portion of an MBA at UH if I wanted to go there.

If it's really something you want to do then go for it. STCL, UH, and Tech are all good schools. The only downside to STCL is the cost.

A lot of my friends are lawyers including my brother.

It's always amusing to go out with them and listen to all the drama and stress they deal with day in and out. You couldn't pay me enough to do it.

I have four different friends who have all said the same thing. I think most of it comes from a feeling that they are not at the same level in their occupation as their friends/peers as far as money, seniority, freedom at work, etc. I think some of these complaints will die down a few years down the road after they put in their time, but what do I know. This is coming from somebody in their late 20's speaking on behalf of friends in their late 20's as well FWIW.

STCL, in my opinion. Far greater visibility and networking here in Houston and even more so if you can get on the Mock Trial/Moot Court competition teams. STCL is great when it comes to teaching practical litigation skills. If you're not looking to be a litigator and can stand living in Lubbock for three years, you may think differently.

1993 graduate of ttu school of law, practicing in house with a major oil company in Houston.

Academically, I think the schools are not that different. Cost wise, STCL is much more.

I don't necessarily agree that STCL gives you much of an advantage with Houston employers. If you have good grades, the jobs will find you, whether in Dallas or Houston. Clearly, STCL has a simple proximity advantage over ttu when it comes to summer jobs and such, so that might be one reason to choose it over ttu if you plan to work in Houston after you graduate, If expensive tuition isn't an issue, then on balance, I might lean slightly to STCL over ttu is you want to be in Houston. I will say the reverse IS true. If you want to work in Dallas, then ttu is going to give you an advantage over STCL.

Again, work in Houston - STCL slightly favored over ttu, but tuition definitely an advantage for ttu.

Work in Dallas - ttu definite advantage over STCL.

Agree on skipping Law School...to my chagrin.

Legacy? that's different. Daddy's watching out, Skippy.

It's a dull grind, for the most part, and frankly, I did much better financially after I left it behind...

Mind you, I got NO calls to clerk at V&E, so...
if you do, by all means, hang around!

Def STCL if you want to practice in Houston. In my experience, our STCL hires have on average been better than UT, SMU, TT and possibly Baylor. They produce good litigators if that's what you want to do.

Lawyer rule #1- don't do it. I've made a lot of money as a lawyer, even from the get go, and comparatively make more than all but a few of my friends. But what's the point in having enough money to do all the things you'd like to do if you don't have the time to actually do it? I'd gladly take half my pay if I could owrk 50% less.
