Don't forget his total lack of knowledge or appreciation of seersucker in the South. Sounds like someone needs to move to Dallas with the rest of the New York poseur wanna-be's. There his disgust and disdain for gentile Southern living is not only acceptable, but expected.

Hit the sales racks at Saks, Niemans or Nordstrom, or just ask a decent tailor. I got most of my stuff of those racks and spent more on the alterations, but my tailor told me he couldn't get the fabric in them for what I paid for the pieces on sale. M Penner is also a nice place to look and hit sales.

And yes, the cut of a lot of suits is far too baggy and crappy off the rack - if you don't shell out for a good tailor you are going to make the impression you deserve. Having fine clothes actually fit you (which takes some craft if you are not a shapeless blob) is one of the purposes of a suit.
