Does anyone have any recommendations as to what committee would be a good one I could apply to volunteer for? I'm coming in cold-turkey with no rodeo experience or connections. I work, so that would limit my availability to evenings.

I'd like to be involved with something that would deal with some of the actual rodeo events, but if that's for more experienced folks, I'm looking for what are the quality, general committees I could look into. (note: cannot do transportation committee though)

there are new member HHs going on right now for different committees. Id try to make a few of those to meet people. That way you can find a committee that meets your requirements and fits your personality.

Just to be clear, you want a committee directly involved with the Rodeo (i.e. Calf Scramble) or the Livestock Show (i.e. Livestock)?

Our committee (Carnival Ticket Sales) just had their happy hour and new recruit meeting and will have our rookie round up next week.

Next year look into our committee as we finish all 'work' prior to the start of the Rodeo and then we have time to enjoy it... instead of 'working' it.

Gatekeepers is fun and has tons of Aggies....I've been on Transportation as well, but prefer Gatekeepers as you tend to interact with more people in a group setting.


Gatekeepers, you basically scan tickets for different entrance areas.

Transpo: manage the traffic of people walking around the grounds....drive golf carts a lot transporting people...which is cool at first, but can become mundane.

Thanks for the info. On the Gatekeeper committee, I assume you have work a set number of shows/hours. Can you provide insight into the requirements of being on the committee?

Current committeeman here, but looking to change committees. I'm interested in the Ranching and Wildlife committee and would like to talk with someone involved. Anyone here a member?

True dilemma here: One if my best friends from high school and A&M is getting married cookoff weekend out of the country. Beach or cookoff?

Yeah, on GK we work 5 shifts and the lengths depend on what gate you are assigned to that day. A normal shift for the stadium gates is you get there around 4:30 or 5 to get signed in and everything, then you work until you aren't needed anymore, usually a song or two into the concert, unless it is a big one like the Jonas Brothers where people just don't stop coming in. I am sure it is different for perimeter gates, different hours and stuff, but no info on that since we haven't worked those.

I feel bad saying this, growing up in the tine and all, but I haven't the slightest clue about the HLSR and how it works. Never been or had the desire to go, and never really asked anyone that has worked for it.


Is the whole thing non profit? Where does all the ticket and sponsorship revenue go? Scholarship funds and crap?

I just got on The Hideout committee recently and can't wait for The Rodeo after going to a few functions.

Nice. Paid membership dues and requested transportation and gate keeper committees.

Gate Keepers is probably a good one if you can only work at night. Plus, you get a lot of interaction with the "fans". You should make sure your phone has a good camera, because you will see some craziness.

I finally got on Calf Scramble after 5 years on the waitlist and plan to serve on that one as long as I am able to stay in Houston. It is great!

Livestock was a good one too, but you work your butt off. Fun to interact with the kids and their animals though.

How can I join and get on a GK committee? Anyone who's on one that could help with how best to accomplish that?

There is a new bar on Richmond, near Montrose, Called Jacksons Bar....pretty awesome.

Maybe GK should have it there next.
