How long do you want to ignore this user?
The wife and I are planning a weekend together sans 2 year old daughter and I wanted some thoughts, ideas, or locations of a place we could visit for a couple of days near or around Houston or at least within 3 - 4 hours drive.

Any ideas?

You might check out Moody Gardens in Galveston. Believe they usually run some specials for Valentines that includes a couples massage in the spa, etc.

from what i have heard, megs offers a solid recommendation. the golf course looks amazing there too. i would go for that and then you are close enough to austin to drive in for a night if you wanted to have a good dinner. although it looks like you would never have to leave that place.

Fredricksburg is a nice choice or La Torretta Resort/Spa on Lake Conroe

the new Lake Conroe place mentioned above should be considered, supposedly a great restaurant there.

there is also a resort out near Brehnam/Chappel Hill that has a 4-star Michelin restaurant on site. supposedly really nice, I have not been.

My favorite Texas B&B is in Kyle, the Inn Above Onion Creek. perfect for what you are looking for and they serve dinner.

a closer and cheaper option is in Brenham, Far View Inn. Used to stay there often when kids were small for close-by "getaways" and the innkeepers are just fabulous.

The 7-F Lodge in Wellborn. Instead of rooms, you get a luxury cabin. You can go the whole weekend without seeing anyone else. No phone, no tv - just a private cabin in the woods with a big comfy bed and a jaccuzzi tub for two.

I checked this place out shortly before the grand opening, and it looked pretty nice. I had been out several years ago before they redid it, and they have vastly improved it.

While not quite as close to Houston, Lake Granbury is nice. We stayed at the Inn on Lake Granbury, and it was excellent. http://www.innonlakegranbury.com/?Tracker=GoogleLocal

Rent a beach house near Galveston, eg Crystal Beach, if you can find a house intact. Beach is empty, no crowds, Paco & Rudy T's across the ship channel. Very relaxing.

The beach is great during the winter.

Knowing my wife, the "cabin" is probably the best bet compared to a hotel/resort. Are there any other cabin-type places recommended???

There is a new J.W. Marriott resort opening up north of San Antonio with a Greg Norman and a Pete Dye course.

That looks really nice. I think you sold me on going there this summer.

Captain Pablo, the only problem with the website is it doesn’t show you where the houses are. Is this at Crystal Beach (part of the island where there are no longer any homes)?

Lost Pines is pretty decent w/ a nice golf course, but there's a sh*t load of kids.

Grammar school is not very romantic but...

The simple rule is use "I" or "me" the same way you would use it if you were only referring to yourself. i.e. Romantic Getaway for me near or around Houston? And the answer to that would be: Lots of places on Richmond or Westheimer, I hear Treasures is nice.

The same should be practiced when captioning a picture of yourself and a friend.

highwayman and me

not

highwayman and I

If you were solo in the photo you wouldn't caption "I"...

OK, I am done. Carry on.

Lost Pines doesn't have as many kids this time of year when it's too cold for the pool and tubing river, Fredricksburg-Rose Hill Manor in Stonewall(eat there it is excellent), Riverwalk in SA, Gruene Mansion in Gruene has cabins and Gruene Hall is next door. Rockport- either Hoopes House B&B, stay in the garden court for more privacy. Breakfast is at a very civilized 9:30 am. Or Lighthouse Inn get a Captain's quarters suite. Eat at Latitudes or Hemingway's(Yes, it re-opened very recently). Take the ferry over to Port Aransas for a day.

Eff the drive. You've only got the weekend.

Head down to Hotel Zaza. You can easily walk to HMNS and MFAH (etc etc) and just hang out.

ada, she's not the museum type, more of an outdoor/hiking/athletic sort of woman.

I think the cabin ini Welborn might be the best option unless I'm missing something.....

So skip the museums and just hike around rice and the parks around there... it's a really nice area and will save you the 6+ hours of driving so you can use it for something a little better. ;-)

97 - the 7F sounds right for you. We usually go there on our anniversary (and got married there). They put the key in the door for you, so you don't even see anyone when you "check in." We usually get our stuff in the room, then go into CS for dinner. We prefer France or Spain of all the cabins. Spain has no windows, so it is totally secluded. They have some walking trails in the woods. When you check out, you just sign the receipt and leave. We haven't seen the people who run the place in years. They do have a spa and will put wine or champagne in the room, but don't have a problem with you bringing your own, and their's is pricey.

Oh, and Chuck Norris and his wife stay there. Each room has a guest log and they'd signed the one in Spain a couple of times.

driving into CS for dinner sounds awesome!!

if you are trying to get away from kids, the last place I'd go would be freakin' Lost Pines or la cantera or any of those type "resorts"
