I got a Boot Loan from the Financial Aid office. An Old Ag gave a sum of money to the A&M Foundation when he died specifically to be used for Boot Loans.

My grandmother told me when I was about 5 yrs old that she would pay for my boots...and she did.

Mine were resoled once as well...about mid-year.

I don't mind donating a little either...will do!

Yes

Worked harder for the boots.
Paid more for the boots.
The boots are more personal and nowadays rarer than the ring.

$8K-$10K on uniforms after you graduate for the military? Uhhh, maybe not that much. I think about half that is average for initial purchase. Granted you add as you go along, I can't foresee it being that much. I'll check out the MC Exchange when I'm back home buying my cammies.

I like the boot rental idea. It would be kind of cool to see those passed down year after year and have some kind of record of who all has worn the same boots. If they have a shelf life of at least 5 years, that would be ~$200 or so. Not bad.

My grandfather promised to pay for my boots when i was 5 and saw the aggie band for the first time.. when it came time to buy the boots he didn't realize how much they cost. hopefully my son or daughter will be able to wear them when it is their time.

It's really hard to place a value on either my ring or my boots, i busted my butt for both. The ring is more Academics but i did pay for the privilage of wearing my boots by getting smoked with my buddies pretty much everyday after 1600 as a fish. we started with around 40 fish and 12 at final review. I know every single scratch on my boots as well as the blood stain from running my bloody cross in them my junior year.

I was talking to my fiancee the other day about how much the corps has changed since my second pass... BQs don't even have to wear the drill field uniform any more. Hell even my pisshead year it was considered hazing for us to require the fish to carry their Cadence with them. I look back at my time aas a blackbelt and i think that experience was just as important in shaping the person i am today as family values that were instilled when i was young.

The only reason you need to have a sabre is if you're an Outfit/Battalion/Company CO/XO. I didn't own one and I was on Corps Staff.

I remember back in '81 I heard that senior boots cost over $400 a pair! I thought that was outrageuos. I had paid a little over $100 for mine in the fall of '76. Since they had been sitting in a dark corner of the closet for 4 years, I contacted the Trigon an offered to donate them and the Trigon gladly accepted.

Last year I paid out a little over $1,000 for my daughter's boots and that didn't include the spurs since she used mine.
