Looking east-southeast. You can make out the old red courthouse in the foreground and the Texas Schoolbook Depository to its left across Houston Street.

Streets all dead ended at Houston because more of the older building west of there had been destroyed in Trinity River floodings. It's one of the reasons street addresses on the west side of downtown start in the 400s and go up as you head east - there used to be three more blocks between Houston Street and the riverfront.

New levees were being built and the triple underpass is under construction in the foreground.

I think I see the old Cotton Exchange building. My mom worked there in the 1940s right after WWII.

I read in one of the local magazines that something like 95% of all trees that have existed in Dallas were after 1900. It sits on a plain so all the trees we have now were planted or imported since 1900.

There is also the pic someone posted on here that shows downtown Dallas and Austin in 2000 vs 2020 and it's absolutely incredible how different they look just in 20 years. Especially Austin. Austin is not even recognizable anymore.

Yes, black land prairie from the piney woods of East Texas until you hit the Crosstimbers. In D/FW area, that boundary roughly correlates to the ridge line we see running from Cedar Hill up the west side of Dallas County.
