Bill's Shortest Election Guide Ever May 2023 Edition!

Voting starts Monday the 24th and Election Day is Saturday May 6th. Only 3 items on my ballot, but they are important. So education yourself and go vote!

Dallas Mayor: Eric Johnson. In a move that surprised many (none more so than certain conniving city councilmen…but that's a different story), Johnson opted not to pursue an open US House Seat to stay mayor. And he's running unopposed. Johnson isn't without his faults but has been a really good mayor. I'm happy to have him around (please be around Mr Mayor) another four years.
---
City Council Place 10: Kathy Stewart. Hottest race on the ballot is to take the baton from 4 term councilman Adam McGough. There are 4 people in this race. 3 have staked their spots by partisan identity (1 left, 2 right), bringing both the good and bad from said identities with them. I appreciate Brian Hasenbauer's focus on poverty/homeless concerns (and frankly, Brian has worked his butt off this campaign); I appreciate Chris Carter's focus on the very real financial concerns, especially the city's bond issues. But both are way extreme on other issues for my taste. And Sirrano…well.

Enter Kathy Stewart. I think Kathy has the perfect blend of experience, temperament, and connections to do a good job filling Adam's shoes (a very difficult chore for anyone) and collaborate with council to make sure D10's needs are met. She has my full support.
---
RISD Place 6 At-Large: Eric Eager. Eric, the incumbent, is my pick in this 2 horse race. Eric is an extremely nice guy, brings a calm temperament to the (unfortunately) crazy landscape of school politics, and has the respect of his peers on the board. Given the high levels of change in RISD in recent years, having some consistency would be a good thing.

Until next time friends…happy voting.

Early voting ends tomorrow (Tuesday). Election day is Saturday. If you are in D10, please go vote for Kathy. Turnout has been, unsurprisingly, pathetic.

Eric signed off on everything that led to RISDs crazy covid policies, DEI curriculum, atrocious academic scores, and declining enrollment.

His number one concern is funding per student claiming funding is the answer.

No way he has my vote. All the "high levels of change" in RISD are for good reasons.

He used taxpayer money to sue the state to enforce mask mandates.

Richardson ISD joins lawsuit against Gov. Greg Abbott for COVID-19 mask mandate ban

Richardson ISD trustees voted 5-2 on Aug. 23 for the district to join an existing lawsuit as a plaintiff against Gov. Greg Abbott.

Trustees Karen Clardy, Eric Eager, Regina Harris, Debbie Rentera and Megan Timme voted in favor of the motion, while trustees Eron Linn and Chris Poteet voted against it

My read on Kathy is basically a vote for the status quo. She does not have a real position on the homeless/panhandling issue and only has a background of spending government money on projects.

Carter is the conservative choice.

Carter has raised some very valid concerns, but he would be an absolute disaster for D10 in the horseshoe. Especially with the bond discussion this next turn.

My read. Kathy may do a good job spending money on behalf of D10. Chris may actually fight for some fiscal responsibility.

Everyone should do their homework and go vote.

I heard this week through a friend with family in RISD that one of the elementaries is losing 10 out of 11 teachers after this year. Not sure if true. Sounds like RISD has gone to hell.

Another friend who is married to a principal in RISD is bailing on RISD and headed to a private school to escape it as well.

Also, Eric Johnson is the best you are going to get going forward. He's at least semi-balanced.

Interesting. We are in RISD and haven't heard that. Our PTA and neighbors are very supportive and fans of our elementary through high school principals. According to the district presentation, turnover this year was typical for other years. Not higher. The district just approved an aggressive pay raise for staff. Looking it up, there are over 55 principals. So wouldn't be surprised if a few leave each year. Neighboring district poach with the best of them.

And there may be reasons the district needs some to move on too?

If you have confirmation or corroboration, please detail.

Yeah, that seems unlikely. Sewing circle rumors. I think RISD is still in good shape.

I do not which is kind of why I was posting it. Found that to be a bit extreme. I can confirm the elementary it was said about if you name some of them. I'm blanking on the name but would remember it if I saw it...

Here is a hill I'll die on....for those celebrating (closer to me) and those calling him a traitor (which is just dumb)...

Dallas City Hall is nonpartisan. You don't run as a Republican or a Dem. You run on your individual merits. Yeah, your backstory can influence things, but there is no R or D next to the box. Which is how it should be in my view.

(Don't know if FtW is nonpartisan...)

Why is it just dumb? If it's a non-partisan position, why announce that you are changing parties (and do so months after the election instead of before)? I think its an overstated deal and won't have a ton of real world impact on Dallas, but I understand those that are upset about it.

I assume it is because he is planning to run for something as a Republican, probably in 26/27. And he is planning to vote in the GOP primary in May, which is public record. If he did that without announcing, it would absolutely get brought up.
Quote:

Why is it just dumb?
Because whether EJ identifies as a Rep or Dem will change nothing about the balance of power downtown. Being upset (or celebrating honestly) is just virtue signaling about your tribe.

Right - I'm kind of poking you here. Everyone knows the reason he changed and everyone knows which party he belonged to when they voted for him. He almost certainly would have faced real opposition if he had announced this change in Sept 2022 instead of Sept 2023. Would he have still won re-election? Maybe. I do find it dishonest to make the announcement at this date after the election.

I understand where you are coming from as a man (sort of) without a party, and I agree that in an ideal world, we would always be judging based solely based on the individual and not on their party affiliation.
