Thinking about moving out to the burbs to get a little more space. My wife has zeroed in on Fairview and Lucas zoned to Lovejoy ISD. We have twin 1st graders (now 2nd I guess) and a special needs 3 year old. Would love a great public system that could work for all of our kids.

I grew up in Dallas but just don't know much about this area of town. Would love to hear any experiences! Thanks!

Everything I've heard about that ISD has been good. We played them in football a few years back. I was over in their press box and got to chat with some of their board members. The ISD used to only go through 8th grade and then kids went to Allen. Started their own high school in 2006 and really did it right.

If I had kids and worked on the east side of D/FW, Lovejoy would be one of the first places I'd look. All the benefits of Frisco and Allen WITHOUT the huge giant size.

Have a 3rd and pre-schooler there and have been happy. We live close and do out of district tuition. It is cheaper than private and still cheaper for me than to move in district from taxes alone. My wife went to school there until 6th grade which at the time was the last grade. The new Superintendent seems to be really good and involved.

Love it. We moved to Fairview from Frisco about a year and half ago. The schools are great (when they are meeting in person....this online junk, that is a different story, but it seems bad everywhere). Everybody always raved about Frisco schools when I lived there, but Lovejoy is so much better. Hard to describe, but it is almost like a private school atmosphere. My experience is just limited to the elementary schools. Frisco always seemed to teach to the STAAR; I don't get that feeling in Lovejoy. Someone else can chime in on the high school, but their number of AP scholars is ridiculous from what I hear. Just be ready to pay some astronomical property taxes.

My wife teaches and coaches in the district. For the most part, its an outstanding school district. Academics are top notch and they put a lot of focus on teaching kids to serve the community as well, especially at the high school level. Very much has a private school feel to it. Kids tend to be in a pretty healthy environment and they are pretty inclusive in keeping all the kids together. This can be good or bad. My wife had a student this year that was very disruptive in every class and there is nothing they'll do about it which made it hard to teach lessons which isn't fair to other kids. There is concern among the teachers as well that kids aren't tested hard enough and they more or less aren't allowed to fail classes, at least at the middle school level.

I will say there is a lot of background politics among the school board/administration and it is really aggravating looking at it with her working there. Qualified people get fired for bs reasons so someone can bring their best friend/family member to work there.

Overall, if my wife stays in education, I hope its at Lovejoy so we can send our kids there without having to live in the district.

This doesn't jibe.

Maybe I should rephrase. The administration basically has a no fail policy which creates some laziness in some of the students according to the teachers. Kids know that they'll pass regardless and won't do the work. Granted that is something that can ideally be fixed at home with the help of the parents. Maybe I should say that the ISD is very good, the kids themselves are somewhat lazy.

Like I said, I'd be overjoyed if my wife stayed there so our kids can go there. We really like the area and people.

My daughter and her family moved to Lucas last year to be in Lovejoy ISD. My nine year old and seven year old grandkids were sad to leave their friends in Allen, but the teachers and students at Lovejoy Elementary made them feel at home. By the way, my wife and I have lived in Fairview for eight years and it's great.

Thanks all, this is very helpful context and information!

We submitted a "contact us" on the website. The assistant superintendent set up a zoom with me and my wife this morning. A pretty gracious move on her part and we don't even live in the district. A great sign though. It was encouraging to hear and reflective of other comments above that they could handle both my special needs son as well as my older boys that need to be challenged.

Would love other thoughts from folks that discover this thread.

I don't know a lot about Lovejoy ISD but have nothing but good things to say about nearby Wylie ISD if you emd up looking a little further east.

Not much to add, but we moved to Lovejoy ISD 4 years ago, before we had kids, because we wanted to eventually raise them in this ISD. We now have 2. I have heard great things about both academics and athletics. Echo what others said about "private school" feel and heavy AP curriculum. The one negative I've heard is the small community causes the typical small-town drama/politics BS.

We technically live in McKinney (Serenity neighborhood). Most Fairview/Lucas homes are on an acre+ and don't have municipal gas / sewer.

This area is a great little corner of DFW.

My high school basketball coach is the head coach at Lovejoy HS now. He's a great coach and a better man. If other employees in the district are similar then I'd probably say it's a good place to be.

We're further south down in Lucas. Even though not too close, would be great to connect with some new neighbors as well.

You can "buy in" to the school district if you live outside of the district. Not sure of the process, but I do know people who have done so.

We are doing this. Simple process of applying then paying for year/semester/month.

Our kids are starting in Lovejoy ISD next fall. We are coming from a private school and living in Richardson. Our experience has been good so far. Guidance Counselors for our older ones reached out very quickly after we enrolled and did a Zoom meeting with them.

We are building in Brockdale right now. Anyone living over there? Would love to connect with future neighbors.

We had issues with the now superintendent due to his wife. It appears the wife no longer works for LoveJoy. I'd advise you avoid her with your kid - not sure if she is still at LoveJoy or of she does private tutoring or just stays home now.

She was not a good teacher in our experience...in fact really bad. She said some things that were downright wrong. However, because her husband was then the assistant superintendent before he joined LoveJoy, there wasn't much we could do. She could say and do whatever she wanted and the school administration would do nothing due to her husband being the assistant superintendent

She basically said our son had mental processing issues in addition to his diagnosis from Scottish Rite when she was not trained to do so. We had a PhD from Scottish Rite saying otherwise. However, she was too arrogant and was basically not going to help our son in order to prove that she was right. She insisted he be put in the special ed program going into 3rd grade. We decided to go outside of the school due to her being worthless for our kid. We kept him in the same school but pulled him from her program and It cost us thousands for private tutoring for a similar program. He excelled in private tutoring because the tutor actually cared and knew what she was doing.

Almost 10 years later, that kid with "mental processing issues" taught himself German when he was 12, will be in Ap German 4 as a junior and scored a 1280 on his PSAT (not outstanding but very good for someone with "mental processing issues").

So if you have a run-in with the superintendents wife - good luck.

Are you referring to Goddard? I thought he was once a principal but never an asst. super...?

He was an assistant superintendent at Prosper ISD. His wife was a "reading specialist" for an elementary school in Prosper when he was at Prosper. She went over to LoveJoy as the dyslexia coordinator. And that was the biggest knock on them in my opinion. It was perceived as the good ole boy system by some as the best qualified didnt necessarily get the best positions...and they Seemed to protect their own.

She was the worst obstacle that my son and our family has experienced in his 11 years of education. Thank God we survived her and our son overcame her bias.

You do know that "being put in special ed program" means a lot different things than it did when you were in school right?

There are GT kids that qualify for some special ed programs.

Yes, very well aware. Granted, this was over 8 years ago. But when someone says that your son just isn't right and has mental processing issues, I'm fairy certain she wasn't intending for him to be in the GT program. I was there and know exactly what she was saying. 8 years have proven her dead wrong.

Wangus, I did not read your earlier post but you are spot on. From McKinney to LoveJoy to RedOak to Prosoer and back to LoveJoy, There is a lot to see in those transitions.

Having said that, I assume that is par for the course at most districts. However, that stigma seems well known with this crew.

When you're assist sup, You're always looking for that full-time sup, which doesn't come open in good districts that often, or ever. Watkins has been the sup in Prosper for 20+ years.

He left Prosper to be the Sup at Red Oak then took the Lovejoy job when it opened. Dream job for anyone in that position. Making 250+k with a government pension ain't bad.

Hey riz, if AgAttack doesn't respond and you still want to get rid of some moving boxes, my family just went under contract in Fairview and will (if nothing major occurs) be moving up there in early/mid September. I would be happy to take those boxes off your hands.
