Funny thing about Austin, no good steaks, burgers or seafood. Having said that, County Line on 2244 (Beecave) has the best beef tenderloin for the price. Hill's has the best burger. Uchi's has the best seafood but, it's mostly raw. Jeffrey's is the best steak but, inconsistent and pricey. Jeffrey's venison is better. Again, Jeffry's has gone way down hill since they expanded. Lots of other mediocre places with quality less than or equal to County Line for more money. IMHO.

Sullivans or Dan McCluskys

I forgot, Green Pastures was once good. I have not been there in a while. Lot's of overpriced mediocre places like the ones above and Ruth's Chris, Houston's, etc. Check Austin360 for those kinds of places.

I'm a grumpy old dude from Houston, where the steaks are good.

Sullivan's or Dan McCluskey's. Although I recommend driving to SA to go to Morton's.

Cool River and Austin Land & Cattle are also good.

Cool River and Sullivans are good for Austin. Nothing compares to Bob's Steak and Chop House in Dallas, but they suffice.

Back in the old days, Dan McCluskey's allowed you to pick your cut out of a meat counter. I used to order a 14 oz ribeye with lots of fat. It was too much beautiful. I don't know if they still do that, but if they do, I'd highly recommend it. Cool River is also very good, as is Sullivans. I think I'd pick Sullivans over them all though.

Where's that hungry icon when you need it?

The best steak in Austin without a question can be found at Gumbo's. I know...Seafood, but the steaks there are the finest cuts I have ever had and you can slice them with your spoon. 8th & Colorado.

My definition of the perfect steak is Brenner's in Houston. Not to be confused with Brennan's. Brenner's is unpretentious with perfect steaks (the exact polar opposite of Sullivan's and Cool River).

But yonger, smarter, richer, better looking, people (above) seem to like these places.

I'm definitly going to have to fire up the grill this weekend.

Sullivan's and Dan McLuskey's??? Maybe 6-8 years ago.

Eddie V's is without a doubt, the best steak and seafood in Austin (Gumbo's a close second).

BTHOB,

Just 10 years ago, you could get a large t-bone and a salad for $7.00. Now, it's more like $17. But, this is definetly the best "fried in butter" steak in Austin.

Here's a second vote for Gumbo's. Outstanding steaks that I prefer over Sullivan's and Ruth Chris.

The downtown location has a great atmosphere and is in the same building as the Brown Bar.

They also have the original location in Round Rock.

I don't think that Round Rock is the original Gumbo's location.

Weren't they over in the Wells Branch area behind Tandem/Compaq/HP before they moved to Round Rock?

Yes, the original Gumbo's was up in Wells Branch. It moved about 1997 or '98.

Flemings is pretty damn good.

And I take great offense to the 'no good burgers in Austin' comment. I'll put an original Dan's hamburger up against any other in terms of just good ol' burgers.

You got me. What's a Dan's burger? I like to think I've tried most places but I have not tried Dan's.

Burger: Depends on your style. Are you a "thin, well-seasoned patty with lots of grease" kind of person or a "thick, purist patty" kind of person? If you like thicker patties, then I like EZs on Lamar, but it's just a burger joint, like many others. For the thin gut-bombs (my favorite) try Bubba's in Cedar Park or go way the he11 out there to Lampasas and go to Storm's (best).

Steak: Why would you have somebody else cook your steak for you? After years and years of trying to find a place who can cook a steak the way I LIKE IT I've decided that there is no reason in the world to pay $25 for a USDA Choice Ribeye when you can buy a PRIME ribeye from the grocery store (Randall's, HEB) for $20 and cook it to perfection yourself. Period. End of story.

Storm's are good, also can be found in Burnet, Marble Falls, and Hamilton.

In Austin, Fran's is good. I believe Fran and Dan used to be married. Also, Ski Shores has good burgers and lakeside atmosphere. Hyde Park Grille has Texas-raised Kobe burgers, very good.

+1 Ski Shores. They're excellent burgers and the atmosphere is fabulous (can get a little busy, though).

I'm not an EZ fan. They moved our neighborhood Amy's next to an EZ so, I have tried a bunch of their stuff. There's also a Freebirds there so it's not an "easy" desision to make. I've been to Storms in Burnet and have not seen a skinnier meat patty outside of Carnes City. I've only been to Storms once. I'm sure I'll try them again since I drive that way a lot but, not the single patty burger.
I like a burger (and steak for that matter) to taste at least as good as what I can grill at home. Anyone remember DSP in College Station?

"Austin" Land and Cattle, (not be confused with Texas Land and Cattle), I believe at 12th and Lamar.... most excellent! Family owned and run. Very cozy atmosphere. Felemings, hit or miss but usually a hit.

Best Burger I had in Austin was at Casino el Camino, on sixth street.
