The typical "premium" steakhouses like Ruth Chris and Sullivans are all very similar and good, but pricy. Why do they all have to serve broccoli with gross cheese and huge plates of mashed potatoes?

The surprising unknown steakhouse is The Backstage in Spicewood, about ten minutes from the intersection of 620 and 71. All USDA Prime and cooked perfectly. If you don't want steak their other dishes are fantastic.

Burgers - I like Huts on 6th - the best onion rings ever too.

Good grief HECUBUS, there are many places in Austin to get good cheeseburgers and steaks. I have lived here all 32 years of my life, believe me I know son. Too many to mention. Try Top Notch for burgers too. They wouldn't be around for almost 35 years if they weren't good. Over.

I've traveled all over the country and eaten at many places that had great steaks and some that just had expensive steaks. Among them, Morton's (Burbank & Nashville), Gibson's on Rush (Chicago), Fleming's (Boston & D.C.), Harris's (S.F.), Hereford House (K.C.), Houston's (a bunch of locations), Gordon Biersch (a bunch of locations), Ringside (Portland, OR), Yardhouse (Pasadena & Irvine) and of course the Denver Chop House.

If I could go anywhere for a steak (money no object), these are the top three places I'd choose from:

1. Houston's in North Miami Beach, FL for a perfect Filet Mignon
2. Sullivan's in Austin, TX for a perfect NY Strip
3. Coldwater Cafe in Coleman, TX for a KC

It would be less than $30 for a steak at any of my top 3 choices. Like I said, I've been places that charge more, but they're not worth it.

In Austin, go to Sullivan's or Dan McKlusky's.

A few years ago I ate at Ray's on north Guadalupe. It is located at the old Ruth's Chris location. It was reasonable and the steaks were very good.

You're young, there's still time.

Good grief, you're correct (about hamburgers in Austin)! I did Hill's Cafe yesterday and home cooked today. They were about equal.

1) Most places do medium well these days and given the choice I do to. Twenty years ago, it was always medium or medium rare.

2) I'm an old geezer who has lost his taste for hamburger. I just don't eat them that much.

3) My favorite Austin burger is Shady Grove's green chile cheeseburger mostly because of the green chiles.

The burgers at Casino El Camino are awesome.

Also, check out Freddie's Place on South 1st.

For steak, I like Sullivan's and Eddie V's downtown.

I had always heard about how good Storm's burgers were and stopped at the one in Burnet on my way to Kerrville several years ago.

It was terrible. The place looked like it hadn't been cleaned in weeks and the food was greasy.

Oddly enough, those happen to be the qualities I like in a burger joint.

I like a greasy slider, and the cleanliness of the place is not a consideration.

Not greasy in a good way. More like if you didn't get the grease hot enough and instead of cooking the food, it just soaked up a bunch of grease.

The cleanliness of the joint was something akin to a movie theater floor. So does that make it a little clearer for you smartasses?

I've eaten at Storms many times. I was very happy to have had that nasty, greasy taste and look forward to having it again.

HECUBUS,
Dan's is at the corner of Manchaca and Ben White (71). I don't get off on the 'best burger of all time' argument, but give 'em a try...I think you'll like 'em!

I do remember eating at Dan's before they raised the freeway, back in the early '90s but, I don't remember the burger. Back then Dan's, Sandy's and Hut's were the proclaimed best places. I now have a long list of places to try or try again. I have officially taken burgers off my list of food items to complain about in Austin...d8)

Dirty's burgers and Austin Land and Cattle steaks.

I forgot about Dirty's. There's a reason they call them Kumbak burgers. You'll figure it out a few hours after you've eaten there. Once I got hooked on Player's Shakes and Onion Rings, I quit going anywhere else when I'm in town.

I've eaten at most of the steak places in Austin. The best steaks I've ever had came from my grill, using filets from Fort Davis Organic Beef. We buy some every time we visit Fort Davis. Try them.

Thats a unique way to market the cattle industry in that part of Texas. The truth is it takes a section of land to support one cow, they can't cut hay, don't need herbicides and don't fertilize. Their biggest expense is fencing and roundin' up the critters.

Excellent cattle country and a beautiful part of Texas.
