I am really just looking ahead. I still have one more year of school left. But on a slow day, I got to thinking "I wonder what advice I could get from Aggies in Austin." I am from North Texas so Austin is not super close to home but still not too far.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Need some more details. What field(s) are you looking to go into? Are you moving more for opportunities or for lifestyle? Either way, definitely have a job offer in hand before moving, unless you have a lot of savings or family money to keep you afloat while you look for one.

Austin is a super hot destination for people in their 20s (and beyond) and as a result it's become quite expensive. So budget is a huge factor here. Assuming you are a typical recent grad, don't try to live downtown as it's mostly luxury high rises, and even the older apartments are exorbitantly expensive.

If you want to be in a cool part of town that is in or near where there's a lot going on, I'd look at East Austin (though it's getting more pricey every year), South Lamar, the triangle. The further you get from downtown, the cheaper it is, unless it's west. There are some great new apartments off of Manor/MLK. South of 71 is also more budget friendly than north of it.

Figure out where your office is and try to live on that side of the river. Traffic is a B, but it's especially bad if you have to cross Lady Bird Lake.

Austin is still a great city! There's no other big city in Texas I'd live instead.

Don't. It is not affordable.

This is good advice. Also, try to find a roommate, apartments are expensive, even more so if you are on your own.

Yeah. Live where you work, not where you play. If you have to commute, E/W is much more preferable to a N/S commute.

Depending on how you vote, stay out of my county.

Make sure if you choose to live downtown that you are willing to put up with sometimes not getting home or leaving because of events going on outside.

Had a buddy who was stuck on the street in his truck one time for hours coming home from work because there was road construction, a protest, and a marathon going on simultaneously.

Austin is a very fun post-grad town if you are willing to pay through the nose for where you live.

Find where your office is.
Find an RV park close by.
Buy an RV and a long term lease.
Live small, save money for a home.

Don't F around with an apartment. RV and, after that, sell the RV or use it for collateral for a home and keep the RV for travel.

I spent over 100k on apartment rent over 7yrs in the early 2000's with absolutely nothing to show for it. Do better than me.

- If possible find a roommate(s) to help with the cost of rent/living (if that's necessary based on your job)
- there is a local A&M club (AustinAgs.org) that can help in developing relationships if you don't know many others, they host events throughout the year
- leverage LinkedIn and the Aggie network if you're looking for a job in a specific industry

I would continue to be "from North Texas."
